Prepper Cook Off Challenge | Peanut And Apricot Protein Bars

in #blog6 years ago

@Canadianrenegade has really out done himself this time, with a cook off challenge that is unique and so fun; The Prepper Cook Off Challenge. We were asked to make a meal based on two ingredients chosen by rolling a pair of die, and then we got to add one ingredient in ourselves. The kicker? It could only include shelf stable items…which means nothing that required refrigeration or anything fresh. Why? Well, because the world is in utter chaos after all…

The Scenario

In the near future, a massive EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) from the sun has knocked out the electrical grid and the world has devolved into chaos. Being a Steemian, you and your group are more prepared than most but after many months hunkering down you are nearly out of food and are forced to scavenge the nearby buildings for supplies.

You are facing a dire scene with almost every building already ransacked and picked clean of food. You persist in your search and are eventually rewarded. Going through the cupboards of one kitchen you find 2 items that fell behind a lazy Suzan and were missed by previous scavengers. Not much, but you also have 1 item and some spices left at your secret lair. You must now combine these items into a meal that won't cause you and your fellow survivors to gag or die of heartburn.

Ingredients We Found In The Ransacked House (decided by a dice roll)

  • Dried Apricots (1 cup)
  • Peanuts (1 cup)

Ingredients From Our Secret Lair (add in ingredient)

  • Rolled Oats (1 cup)

We were also able to add in a minimal about of seasoning, spices, oils etc.

  • 2 tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil

What We Made

Peanut and Apricot Protein Bars

I know what you are thinking, are protein bars a meal? Well when the world is in complete chaos and you are on the edge of life and death…I think a delicious protein bar would be an absolute treat. Plus, you don’t have to use any valuable energy resources to prepare it. Not to mention that it is full of the much needed protein and carbohydrates to sustain such a stressful situation.

Well, now that I have convinced you that a Protein Bar is indeed a meal…Let me show you how I made them…

IMG_0130.jpg

First, you will need to shell all of those peanuts. Because after all ...what else do you have to do with all of your spare time? Or, if you are a real thinker, you may already have some shelled peanuts on hand. In that case, use those instead and read a book on animal tracking in your spare time.

Then you will heat up your coconut oil and honey over your wood burning stove until melted…

IMG_0132.jpg

Next, roughly chop up your peanuts and apricots…

IMG_0133.jpg

Combine them in a bowl with the rolled oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg…

IMG_0135.jpg

Then pour in your oil and honey mixture…

IMG_0137.jpg

And press it into a pan lined with parchment paper that you happen to have a pantry full of. After all, it means there are fewer dishes to do, saving that precious water. Plus, it makes a great fire starter to keep you and your family warm when you are finished with it. Win win.

IMG_0139.jpg

Then just place it back on your old trusty wood burning stove to cook for about 30 minutes.

IMG_0140.jpg

Finally, just let cool..cut and enjoy. Well, as much as you can enjoy a delicious Protein Bar while the world is in shambles outside your door.

The best part…These actually taste good!!
My tiny humans devoured them shortly after taking this picture.

So there you have it, stuck in a world where there is limited food...make yourself a protein bar, sit back and relax.

Thank you for putting on this ridiculously fun contest @canadianrenegade!

Thank you for reading,

Happy Homesteading.

This looks delish @llfarms. Good job cope.

+1000 for the cope reference!!

Those look fantastic. Good roll! I would literally make those without any changes. Glad you had some parchment around during the apocalypse.

Right!?! I got lucky, I have to admit I was pretty nervous 😆. Thank you so much! I actually made some more this morning because we loved them so much. And yes, that pantry full parchment paper is vital during the apocalypse hahaha.

This is amazing @llafarms

Haha! Thanks Dante 🙏

These look delicious! I may substitute the peanuts with almonds.

I am hungry again :)

❤️ Thank you

Congrats on your Curie!!

Quick question. My wood-burning stove is in the shop. Can I use my non-woodburning one?😋

Thank you for your entry! Simple but that actually looks good and yes, in the apocalypse protein bars are considered a meal.

Oh I think I have all I need. I go hiking often and I buy protein bars with apricot just like those but less yummy and with additives and hateful plastic wrap about it. I just need the kitchen for my own. It actually looks yummier, more enviroment friendly and would save me money cos I always carry those on my walks.
Pd. Waiting for me feathery friends update.
