LAYOFF: IS IT THE ONLY SOLUTION OR A ESCAPE GOAT?

Just this morning my colleague received a memo that her service will no longer needed effectively today. We are all shocked as it happens immediately and without a further notice. After a several minutes of crying and comforting, she left the office bringing all her favorite stuff which she decorated in her table. Now we are left unspoken, staring to each other like we are next. Then one colleague of mine spoke and said there are many employees that are candidate for termination. We are wondering if the company is in struggle of having a financial issues but another colleague of mine said its impossible since they can see the figures we are getting and it stable. She added, how come our company is loosing money if they can give hundred thousand of salaries to managers. We just can't shut our mouth when the truth needs to come out.

Being a newbie in this company, I have to avoid conflicts with my co-workers. But I can't blame them why they really feel bad in the management, specially when they do not implement a fair and just system. Unfair, no justice, no basis... these are the words I kept hearing from them. I did not understand before why but as time goes by, as I spend more months, I can see, hear and witness everything. Yes, you can't just really pretend to shut up.

Reality bites, arab people took more than other nationalities. But not only that, the money wasn't distributed properly. If each department has initial salary budget of 100,000, the managers took already 70% of it then the remaining money will be distributed to the salary if his/her employees. What the hell? Are the only managers really gets all the privileges when the truth is most of the time they just signed papers while his whole team was doing all the effort from scratch to becoming a product? Now, they will layoff some employees to make cost-cutting?? Why they can't think of another solutions then? There are so many and here it is:

  1. Reduce the salary of managers who's earning AED 30,000 above.
  2. Reduce the salary scheme for everyone for the meantime, if the company gets stable, then they can returned the salary.
  3. Hiring freeze, this will allow the company to consolidate several positions or departments. It can also serve as an opportunity to restructure departments. Also, if an employee does retire or quit, you don’t need to necessarily replace their position. Instead, you could divide the work between other employees.
  4. Review the expenses such as operating cost, production cost, supply expenses etc.
  5. Lower benefits such as insurance, vehicle usage and gasoline reload, mobile allowance, etc.
  6. Offer unpaid vacation time which surely employees will enjoyed. It is more acceptable to go back in your country for the mean time at least you are rest assured you still have work when you return. The company can save money and the employee will return well rested from a short vacation.
  7. Early retirement for those employees aging from 45 and above.

TRUTH HURTS

The reason they cannot implement number 1 is because the deciding manager itself will be affected. So is it like for you to avoid all of this better terminate several employees? What will be the impact of AED 1,500 salary of a normal employee they will terminate to the company? Is it enough? Or decrease AED 5,000 above from each managers? Is it really hard for the managers to get salary decrease if their salary remains in five digits? Will it cost them too much? How about those employees who's earning low? What about their family? Where is the logic here.

PRETEND AND SKIP EFFECT

Act like "I don't care, not my problem at all". Saddest reality. This is why poor always remains poor and rich man becomes more riches. Why it always goes like this? How can we have a fair and just treatment in this world? In this country? Until when we can be maltreated? Until when can we received discrimination.
