Zen Mountains and Relaxing Beaches

Maracas Bay

Have you ever been to the beach on a rainy day? Some people may frown upon this. In some cases, this may mean that the waters may be rough and conditions unfavorable. The drive to Maracas bay is around an hour and a half. The route takes us north through the Northern mountain range and onto the northern coastline of Trinidad and Tobago. The beautiful scenery of flora and fauna among the rolling hills and mountain sides are more than worth it even if the waters were rough and the sands were wet!

Pristine and Serene

As soon as we got to the mountain sides, the air was much more crisp and light. The views of the jungle and small settlements in the area enveloped and overwhelmed the eye sight. Mist crowned the valleys between us and the mountains on the other side. It almost seemed like another world to us. The rainy aesthetic added to the beauty of the area as the shadows caused by the canopies of trees over the road way were accentuated.

The mountainous roadways are quite dangerous as hairpin turns are abundant along the way.

The vegetation is so beautiful.

I must say, this scenery along the way made me feel like I was on some east Asian mountain range looking for enlightenment, on a journey for self fulfillment.

I also resolved to live on the mountains and become one with the earth. What? Don't judge.

When you start seeing sea water and cliff sides into the ocean, this means that the beach is close! You can begin to smell it and feel the difference in the air. At this point, it meant that the drive through the mountain range to the northern side is complete, excitement and anticipation rises!

The last few seconds of the route is so dramatic in nature. What I mean is that the whole beach is revealed in such a manner that when you turn the corner, you can see the whole beach from a height as the road begins to descend from there onwards. Check it out!

VAMOS A LA PLAYA! Beach Time!

Trinidadians, it seems, don’t like to give up on partying! You would expect to see a significantly smaller amount of people on the beach but NOPE. The beachers turned out in their hundreds in spite of the inclement weather! The roadways that granted access to Maracas that passed through mountains had recently suffered a few landslides as well. The damages were rectified, but you would think people would be a little cautious as the rains were still an issue. We took the risk so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised!

The beach had some renovations done recently since the last time I visited. On the large sandy shore line, multitudes of beach chairs were placed along with umbrellas. I jokingly thought it was almost reminiscent of a theater with the seats all lined up in rows and columns, the sea being the screen.

The peculiar but very awesome thing was that the waters were extremely calm. Maracas is not known for being a beach of calm waters. Surfers and body boarders were probably majorly disappointed but not us recreational bathers!

The remarkable thing was that it was rainy and this should have meant that the waves should have been even more choppy. Irregardless, this uncharacteristic but much appreciated calmness meant that bathing would have been even more fun and relaxing.

Bathing was so relaxing as the serenity of the waters paired with the view of misty mountains shoreside made you forget about your troubles. Sand dollars were abundant and the waters were so clear that one could submerge one’s face and see lots of fishes! I regretted not bringing a goggles for clearer viewing though. I definitely need a waterproof camera, maybe a GoPro or something of the sort for these kinds of adventures.

After Bath Desserts

After a nice long dip, the hunger kicks in! Nothing feels better than getting some treats after bathing in the sea. I decided that ice cream would be the dessert of choice and headed for the shops on the beach. I found a cool home made ice cream stand and ordered a nice scoop of cookies and cream.

There was a nice assortment of local flavours.

The texture of the ice-cream wasn't too bad, but it left me feeling unsatisfied. The flavour was on point non the less and the waffle cone saved the after bath treat!

Fun Filled Beach Day

To me, rainy weather adds to an experience. I don't fear catching a cold if i get wet and will never let that spoil or prevent me from having fun! Case in point! What a relaxing and well needed recreation this trip was. I hope you enjoyed the adventure and that some of the fun and relaxing vibes get transferred to you. Let me know how you felt about the scenery and what our beautiful Island of Trinidad has to offer in the comments! Thanks for reading.

The rain provides a sweet, unexpected texture. Makes me want to go adventuring there. Great job. ☺️
