What are the romance languages?

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

The Romance languages are: Catalan, French, Italian, Provencal, Portuguese, the Rhaeto-Romantic dialects, Romanian, Sardinian and Spanish. They are all descended from Vulgar Latin, which is the term used to describe the version of Latin spoken by commoners in the Roman Empire, instead of formal Classical Latin. In the Roman Empire, locals had to speak Latin, and over time pronunciation and use of words evolved differently in different areas, and other words were taken in from nearby cultures. Although modern English does have a lot of words derived from French, which were absored after the Norman Conquest, it is a west Germanic language with Anglo-Saxon rootsb as well as elements of the languages of the Vikings.
