Alex Jones is a little too over the top for me but I know what you mean by a more realistic version of events. Right now, it seems there are more folks practising good investigative journalism than there are journalists doing it, some are even on Steemit.
I'm sure that 'over the top' is part of his act, so that the info he presents is less digestible. He's an actor, but not a great actor, and I think his function is to make any alternative news media look crazy by association.
Yes, he's controlled opposition.
