in #blog5 years ago

Every year there are fires in the Amazon. It is normal. What is not normal are the values reached this year. The number of fires has reached the highest number in the last seven years. In this way, 2019 has been marked by the 38% increase, especially in cities where there is greater deforestation.

According to the Brazilian Space Research Center (INPE), 72,843 forest fires were reached, there are currently active fires in various parts of the Amazon rainforest and concerns about the environmental policy of President Jair Bolsonaro are growing.

INPE said that since Thursday satellite images detected 9,507 new forest fires, mainly in the Amazon basin, home to the world's largest tropical forest and which is considered vital to counteract global warming.

The most affected state, with 13,641 foci, is that of Mato Grosso, which spans much of the Amazon.

Last Monday part of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and Sao Paulo, the largest city in the country, were affected by the extension of an intense smoke coming from the fires and which practically shortened the day due to premature darkening.

The sources of fire have affected 68 protected areas as environmental or indigenous reserves, mainly in the Amazon, in just one week; The Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park, in Mato Grosso, has already lost 12% of its vegetation.

Part of the problem is the provocation of fires by farmers for agriculture, but in Mato Grosso, for example, it is prohibited from July 15 to September 15, a time of drought.

INPE showed in its study that since the arrival of Bolsonaro to power, deforestation in the Amazon has increased by 88%.

Fires are a common agricultural "cleaning" technique in the region. But they are also one of the methods of illegal deforestation.

60% of the Amazon is in Brazil, absorbs 1,000 million tons of carbon dioxide. The denunciations took more than 15 days, but the news did not become visible until the fire became a triple threat between Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.

The forest contains 40 thousand species of plants, 427 mammals, one thousand 300 birds, 378 reptiles, more than 400 amphibians, about 3 thousand freshwater fish and 400 different indigenous peoples. While the Amazon River basin is the largest in the world with 20 percent of fresh water on land.
