How to preserve your bamboo in a natural way that will last for long years

Submerging bamboo to salt water for 2 month or 60 days is an effective way to preserve you bamboo which is best for construction purposes. This process will help to kill and protect the bamboo from any insect infestation for 50 years. That is according to what I learned from our training seminar when I was working in a well known retail hardware store.
The bamboo will absorb the salty water that will help to remove the starch that causes to insect infestation.

This process is an effective traditional way of treating bamboo. Even up to now this curing process is still existing but there are some used chemical for treating bamboos like borax powder or boric acid. It is a powder that easily dissolve in water and mostly used to kill parasites and other insect infestation in any kind of wood.

3 to 5 years old bamboos are harvested which is the desired age of bamboo best for construction materials. It also depends on the thickness of the wall and durability of its kind. Not all bamboos are good food building construction, there is a type of bamboo called " Butong " very rich in starch and any carbohydrate content. Prone to insect infestation and easily break during the process of treatment.

Before soaking or submerging the bamboo in salt water. Bamboos are drilled at the center of the pole to create a hole for deep penetration of salty water to remove the piled starch inside the bamboo. This will also kill and eliminate any insects that will destroy the wood inside.

They used a long round bar and there is a drill bit attached to it. The size of the drill bit depends on the size of the bamboo pole to avoid any cracks or damage during the drilling process.

When the holes are all set the bamboos are ready to fully submerge that will last for 2 weeks or 60 days.

After 2 weeks of leaching process or submerging the bamboos in salty water. Bamboos are pulled out from the salty water and let the bamboo drain the stack liquid inside the pole by positioning it vertically for fast draining.

Next the bamboos are place under the heat of the sun for a week. Then bamboos are rotated for the even and portion result . When the color is golden yellow that is the best time to stop the drying process under the sunlight.

Too much exposure of bamboo and totally dry under sunlight might cause cracks or break to bamboo.

For the last and final process, let the bamboo dry slowly in a cool and dry place. This process will help to preserve the shelf life of your fully treated bamboo in a natural way of treatment.

Drying is the last part of the process, in addition you have to store your bamboo properly. It doesn't guarantee your bamboos totally free from other parasites like termites.

Some hardware treat the land area by spraying home trek chemicals diluted to 8 liters or water. They spray the ground within the surrounding it will protect the place from crawling insects like termites 3 feet below the ground.

This post is also a support for the " Walk of Hope Project ". The bamboo preservation is related to the bamboo production of Bayawan city in Negros.

Bayawan is the recent place where Marlon also known as @flabbergast-art promoting his advocacy by enriching people to the world of art. By the help of Tatay Dagsa together with his kawayantech team and other artists. The smooth flow and intention of Walk of Hope project is easily delivered to the community.

We are looking forward for the success of this project and we as part of this advocacy its our obligation to spread the word of learning. We are thankful to these group of people making this possible most especially to @flabbergast-art and other art enthusiast. Hoping for more project to established vast network with the community using the indigenous instruments from our Philippine art and culture history.
