Love Disconnection - The End of Online Dating + Death of Craigslist Personals
Looking for love? Congress says youre entitled to. As of today, the entire personals section of Craigslist, a free platform in meeting people has been removed.
The dawning of the 21st century saw the advent of online dating. An efficient means of meeting and connecting with people, without the struggle of wasting time and money. The late 90s was a golden age of the internet as it started to adapt to modern trends, especially the dating scene. One of them being that the the workforce began so involving, that conventional dating was a challenge. People were too exhausted coming home from fighting traffic (love that 101 right?). Online dating provided a platform where you can place an ad and simply wait for the right person to respond. So while unwinding from a long day of work, you can sift through the emails of potential partners and start a conversation with the one that you match with. It eliminates the hassle of physically driving around to hot spots and gamble your evening hoping to even talk to one person. Its 2018, who the in tech, design or silicon valley in general, has time for that?
While so many dating sites started cropping up in the 2000s, one site in particular stood out the most. Cragislist. A simple, streamlined looking site that's perpetually stuck in 90's web design. It became my network hub for a myriad activities. Job hunting, freelancing, selling/buying, and of course dating. The main reason, is cause it was free. Sites like Match, eHarmony and even OK Cupid, charge outrageous prices just to email someone. So if you are a frugal person like myself, naturally, youd wanna go for a service that doesnt break the wallet.
Now that congress is restricting our love quest, it paints a bleak picture of things to come. Theres rumors of them going after Reddit, Backpage, and other dating sites/apps. Our simple freedom to socialize and be paired up with those we're compatible with, is now being compromised due to an asinine law that holds the vehicle responsible and not the shady people hijacking it. I understand that CL has experienced issues with sex-tracking, porn, and scam artists, but this isnt the way to approach it.
I can go off on a political tirade, but my point is that if the government is going to kill online dating, then theres a number of lonely nights ahead of you. Plus as an ABDL, its going to make my dating situation nearly impossible now.
RIP Craigslist Personals.
