Treebeard - Hildebrandt brothers Tolkien calendar, my stories about illustrators:)

I continue the Tolkien calendar stoty, and today we have another illustration and another character - the  Treebeard.

 

This is one of my favorite illustrations. I always felt something special to ents, and this illustration is really close to me. And the palette? How awesome is that, especially for a traditional drawing! This green creature with a mystery shine, how great he is?

Usually I show lots of references, but here we don't have much, only one posing for hobbit photo:

Greg Hildebrandt Junior remembers, that when his uncle worked with the painting he had much more paint on his cloth then of the painting. I find it nice, I love to work in the same way, to be in contact with the material. Also, the reference for the ent was created from clay, a sculptere, raw one, with right light on the photo. 

Tim Hildebrandt remembers, that the most tricky in this illustration was to find the right proportion between hobbits and Treebeard, he had to look much bigger then them.
