Ork captivity - Hildebrandt brothers Tolkien calendar - chapter three, my stories about illustrators:)

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

Today I continue telling you a story about Hildebrandt brothers and their illustrations based on Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".  You can look threw my previous posts to see the previous months, and in today's post we have June, and Merry and Pipin in the ork captivity:

First of all this illustration is a great example of differences in artistic view:) I imagine orks completely differently, these guys look more like pigs (Pigs slaves from Doctor Who come to mind). But it's not about critique, but about sharing art, so:

As usual, Greg junior posed for the hobbots, but this time only one of them,. For that who's bounded posed Tim Hildebrandt, and here we got a reference:

And also he posed for one of the orks as well:

The ork in the front reference:

It's interesting that the first idea about their armor was to make them like those worn by Roman legionaries. This idea appeared cause the image of the ork with a shield was referenced with their depiction.

But finally the artists changed their mind and added other styles to the armor. The general illustration only won from it:)

Thank you for watching:)

Love, Inber

These are fascinating. I've never seen the Hildebrandt illustrations before. Could you tell me what year they were done?

Sure, it's somewhere around year 1975-76. BTW they also created Star Wars poster, one of them:)
