Rollo's War Poem

in #blog5 years ago

In the portuguese community of Steemit, I have a project called #TrovadoresNordicos (Nordic Minstrels), a tag that shows some history, prose poems and others writings about the Viking's era rich culture and mythology.

A character that is important to the proses and ballads of this culture is the skaldic god Brági, one of the poets of the Scandinavian Leaders' court, and a man that liked to declaim his poems touching harp.

One of the poems from the great Nordic universe can be found in an episode of Vikings TV series, declaimed by Rollo at the Bråvallaslaget, the Bravalla Battle, in the year 750 a.C., when the army of Lord Ragnar was attacked by the saxons. Rollo declaimed it when they were protecting themselves in the shield wall.

Now stand on the keel
Is cold the ocean breeze on your face
In this moment you do not lack courage
Your wild life here ends

For those who smile to death
The best luck Gods reserve.
With women in life pleasure you had
One day everyone must die

Are open the gates of the Valhalla halls
Valkyries are waiting
To select the worthy
From moving to Valhalla
