Ecosia - What is this?

in #blog7 years ago

Yesterday I have seen an ad on YouTube about this project
https://www.ecosia.org/

I am not sure if this is an honest attempt of doing something good for the environment or a smart way to make money.
When you do a search, you are shown around 7/8 ads and they state "On average you need around 45 searches to plant a tree!". Also, the simple display of ads is not the real money maker, but the actual click is.

This project is on since 2009 and as of today they claim to have planted over 17 million trees.

This is how an ex employee of Ecosia replied to somebody on Quora to the question "Is Ecosia better for the environment than Google?"

(you can see the full topic here https://www.quora.com/Is-Ecosia-better-for-the-environment-than-Google)

One of the thing that come out from the information found in the forums, is that, obviously, Ecosia tries to discredit the competitors, saying, for example, that google is not green (false) and similar. The funniest thing is that they also discredit bing, that it is actually what they use for the search engine.

I hope I am just being very critical towards them and that in reality they are a honest project.

What's your view?

Sort:

There also another charity search engine called https://www.goodsearch.com/
It powered by yahoo which is powered by bing.
The diff is in goodsearch you can pick alot of charities

Well, the big question at this point is: "Do you want to 'give' money to charities or to Google?"

Myself. It harsh i know but most charity are frauds. I give my time to them instead of money bc i know i helped.

Well, the meaning of my question was "using the service, you make the company earn money. You prefer to do it for Google or a charity?"

Naw bing rewards

Um the chart is wrong. Ecosia is powered by bing so bing is also xo2 neutral.

I do fully agree with you. I find that chart "sad" as it is obviously an attempt to discredit the competitors.

Been using Ecosia for near enough a year now and love it. Such a simple idea and I'm sure that it'll break through into the mainstream in the coming years - with our carbon footprint ever increasing, now's the best time to convert to it!

Nice post.

How is it in terms of results? Is it as good as google (or at least at a reasonable level)?

I haven't really noticed a significant difference, and being powered by Bing probably means it gets the same results.

Planting is a social work and we all will benefit. This is a beautiful way to show you but there is something hidden here that I do not understand?

I do think the same. I mean, yes, probably they really plant trees and do a good thing for the planet, but also they put money in the pocket. Then , I don't know...

i am also using for more then 1 year, i have over 500 trees planted and I am happy with it! It is a pretty good search engine. Not very specific like google, but does it's job! And if it really is planting trees, then I am very happy!
