We are NOT Like the Rest of the World

I have a big problem with the Nigerian Middle class, and I will explain why briefly. It has become crystal clear to fellow Nigerians and the rest of the World that the nation is on a path of regression even as poverty, violent conflict amongst others are on the increase.

In other to protect ourselves from the harsh reality facing the country, the middle class has formed a bubble around itself and feigns obliviousness to the general plight of the masses.

You see issues of no immediate concern being discussed and debated by the middle class, even when they hold little value to our immediate society. Issues like racism, feminism amongst others leads some of our intellectual discourse when we in fact face more pressing issues in my opinion.

Hear Me Out
I am not against the discussions of these topics, but what use is a conversation about ‘Bride price' for example, when the most basic rights of women are still not acknowledged in most parts of the country. Is it not better to channel our energies to our actual concerns than waste intellectualism on vain issues?

The forthcoming presidential elections is another issue where the middle class attitude towards the Country is frankly irritating. Many will simply abstain from voting, leaving the poor and uneducated at the mercy of corrupt, greedy poli
