Abandoned places Part I - The Town

Hei readers, lurkers, commenters. If you have been following me for a while, you know that I love abandoned place and so do some of my friends, so last weekend was a an excellent spring weather for such a trip - to revisit an abandoned military area in Estonia, near Türisalu. I have briefly blogged about this place earlier, perhaps a year ago - my photo and writing skills have improved a bit since then, and every time is a bit different experience, as you always see something new, so get comfortable and read on.

After the gang is together and a mandatory trip to grab some supplies (a cold beer and snacks) is done, we jump in the car and the trip can start.

The weather is fine and inviting to be outside. The darkness in the previous photo is created by the tint of the car window. Somehow everyone is driving towards the city except us.

If you plan on visiting the same area and are on the lookout for the place (it might not be easy to spot at first), you are very near, when you see the purple tree. Why is it purple? Good question!

As we make it to our destination, we park the car and head ahead on foot. You can feel that you are already far from the city, as the grass feels much greener and lush here, even in the early spring.

This is the fist building a visitor comes across - an old movie theatre. Doesn't look like a movie theatre, right? Walls, windowsills collapsed, holes in floors and ceilings, blocks of concrete everywhere - it looks like war has ravaged it. But really it has been time that has done it's number here.

From the windows one can see large meadows surrounding the area, as its vastness takes a decent amount of time to traverse. People love to play paintball here, this can also be seen in some of the major rooms.

We come to an old diner. Those fools, this diner doesn't even have a roof! How did they eat during rainstorms? Time and weather again are to blame for taking the roof.

Moving on, the signs of nature taking back it's belongings becomes more evident. The asphalt is being swallowed by greenery, occasionally even small trees are growing in the middle of the road. Roofs can be considered small forests - a bit more and one could get lost there ;)

Careful, if you're gonna climb those roofs though. The trees growing there have made the roofs weak and a slightest step can send the building collapsing, if you're not careful enough. Some of walls look like they are going to give in any time now.

This is the highlight for guys loving heights - are you bold enough to reach the top of this tower? I wouldn't recommend it without a parachute as the tower looks about to crumble with one gust of a wind. And yet it is still standing strong after all these years. I manage to climb a third of it, just to reach some roofs adjacent to it, even that makes my heart pound.

One of the barracks unfortunately, is not recommended to check out at all from the inside, as much of the floors, ceilings and roofs has collapsed entirely and being aware of your surroundings is paramount here.

Some of the walls around here are built with red bricks. How a red brick is decaying and crumbling over time, is almost pretty and some kind of an artistic beauty can be found in it.

We have travelled quite a bit, checking all the buildings in this area, yet much is to be seen. We now start moving towards the part of the area, where buildings are scattered and where one must walk more and travel over meadows, so we stop here and have our small picnic. Until next time - we'll continue soon.
