Just Making Another Beer - Double Wheat Batch (S1E1)

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone, decided to come back to my crazy hacked beer batches... using prepared malts/extracts.
This time using a double punch of Wheat that will bring it to around 6-6.5%... completely blind this time...

The last one I did with wheat, was a pretty long brewing one... due to I think, my sugar concentration for the yeast type. The little fellows were not supposed to sustain something like up to 7.5%.. and as a result, it took a lot of time to convert the last bit... about 5 weeks total. Plus the temperature was a bit lower than usual (around 20C at the start, lowering to 18-19 during most of the process).

This quick video snap is just a "how it looks" the live fermentation in a test tube after a 24 hours-old prepared batch, just for the fun!
I added it a bit of sugar on purpose, to just make it even more stupidly active (probably won't be good for drinking, though). You might also ear the bubbling of the batch that was next to it... Next time!

Let's see if I can make some quick videos about this stuff... don't promise much, since I am just having fun. But let me know what you think. And please ask any questions... I might learn more with them than you!! LOL

NOTE: If you can't see the bubbles on the normal resolution of Dtube, change the video format to the source and it should be quite evident.

I really want to get into brewing. It just seems like there are some startup costs...

Actually, the startup costs are the cheapest part of it... to start you only need:

  • A plastic bucket (usually something around 30 litters) with a syphon or the ones like mine with a tap.
  • A spoon and a 1 to 3 litre cup/container to measure
  • Bottle beers (I use the ones with mechanical cap, so I don't need to use a machine to bottle up every time)

And then for the beer:

  • Sanitizer (no-rinse one)
  • Water
  • Yeast
  • Malt extract + enhancers (basically sugar or some mix with malts)
  • Priming sugar (to make the bubbles) if you are going to do it on the bucket or priming drops if you are going to do it on the bottle.

Sanitize everything very well, boil 2 to 3 litres of water and mix with the extract+enchancer, then fill up with water until it cools below 30C. Wait 2 or 3 weeks (or until fermentation ends), bottle up with priming drops or sugar. Wait another week and Voilá Beer!

Easy peasy!

Quite low... but I am fine with it. Not doing a race. Just trying to be myself. Happy to support the initiave still.
