Healthy Eating Tips for the Fall

in #blog5 years ago

We are nearing the end of fall. Fall is the season of harvest, time to store up fuel for winter. And, of course, to stay healthy through the winter they were preparing their bodies for it in advance - in fall. Those changes included life style and dietary changes to start warming up, to store energy for winter time, to slow down from some summer activities and to consume foods that facilitate the transition.

Foods to be eaten in fall:

  1. Vegetables – first of all root vegetables: beets, carrots; all the pumpkins and squash – pick your favorite ones; cabbage, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, broccoli. Those foods were considered protective for mucous membranes of the nose and throat, which suffer both from dryness and incoming cold in fall.

  2. Fruits – apples, pears, grapes (but not too much).

  3. Meats – duck, turkey. Those meats are considered to be warm, but not too hot.

  4. Fish – salmon, scallops, mackerel.

  5. Dominating flavors of fall are pungent (like in onions, garlic, even hot peppers) and sour: lemons, limes, yogurt, and sourdough bread. Everything should be consumed in moderation, of course, and please note – those foods are more potent when consumed raw!

  6. Cooking tips: less salads, more cooked vegetables, soups, purees. Cooking should focus on providing more energy for the cooler season – cook with less water, at lower heat, for longer periods of time. Baking and sautéing are the best examples.

  7. Keep hydrated – Because fall is the time of dryness. Try to drink lot of warm drinks, don’t forget to moisturize your skin.

Stay warm – weather is very insidious in fall; it seems to be warm, but the temperatures drop abruptly from day to night. Don’t let the cold to catch you unprotected! And try those healthy recommendations starting today!

Have a healthy and happy fall!
