Evolution of American flag - Story of Stars

1777

After United States of America emerged as an independent country. The first flag was adopted in 1777. There were 13 strips seven red and six white and 13 stars one for each state of the union.

• Delaware
• Pennsylvania
• New Jersey
• Georgia
• Connecticut
• Massachusetts
• Marland
• South Carolina
• New Hampshire
• Virginia
• New York
• North Carolina
• Rhode Island

1795

In year 1795 two more states were added.

• Vermont
• Kentucky

So two more strips and two more stars were added on the flag, now the flag had 15 strips and 15 stars.

1818

In the year 1818 five new states were added.

• Tennessee
• Ohio
• Louisiana
• Indiana
• Mississippi

On April 4, 1818 Flag act law was introduces which provide the rule to have 13 strips representing the original states and add new stars for any new state which will be added in the union. So now the flag had 13 strips and 20 stars.

Same year on December Illinois was added as new state of the union. A new Flag act low was introduces which state If a new state is added in the union the flag will not be changed until the next July 4th. So a new star for Illinois was added on July 4th so now flag had total 13 strips and 21 stars.

1820

In 1820 two more stars were added in the flag for Alabama and Maine. Now flag had 23 stars and 13 strips.

1822 Missouri - 24 Stars and 13 Strips
1836 Arkansas - 25 Stars and 13 Strips
1837 Michigan - 26 Stars and 13 Strips
1845 Florida - 27 Stars and 13 Strips
1846 Texas - 28 Stars and 13 Strips
1847 Iowa - 29 Stars and 13 Strips
1848 Wisconsin - 30 Stars and 13 Strips
1851 California - 31 Stars and 13 Strips
1858 Minnesota - 32 Stars and 13 Strips
1859 Oregon - 33 Stars and 13 Strips
1861 Kansas - 34 Stars and 13 Strips
1863 West Virginia - 35 Stars and 13 Strips
1865 Nevada - 36 Stars and 13 Strips
1867 Nebraska - 37 Stars and 13 Strips
1877 Colorado - 38 Stars and 13 Strips

1890

In 1890 five new states were added in the union.

• North Dakota
• South Dakota
• Montana
• Washington
• Idaho

Which led to add 5 more stars. Now the flag had 43 Stars and 13 Strips

1891 - Till Date

1891 Wyoming - 44 Stars and 13 Strips
1896 Utah - 45 Stars and 13 Strips
1908 Oklahoma - 46 Stars and 13 Strips
1912 New Mexico and Arizona - 48 Stars and 13 Strips
1959 Alaska - 49 Stars and 13 Strips
1960 Hawaii - 50 Stars and 13 Strips
