Old Faithful, Riverside Geyser & More-Daytripping In Yellowstone National Park

Old Faithful-- Still Frames of Eruption

After my fiance and i finished touring West Yellowstone and the Yellowstone Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center , we drove deeper into the park to see some of the world famous geysers. Yellowstone National Park is home to more geysers than any other place on the earth. We were lucky enough to catch the full eruptions of two of these geysers during our trip , Old Faithful and Riverside Geyser. These two geysers are known worldwide for their massive sizes. Old Faithful was named in 1870 , and was the first geyser in the park to recieve a name. It is a highly predictable geothermal feature, and has erupted regularly , every 44-125 minutes since 2000. The eruptions are over 100 feet, with an eruption duration of 3-10 minutes.

Riverside Geyser- Upper Geyser Basin

Riverside Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin, and shoots steam and water upwards of 75 feet overhead. With an impressive eruption duration of twenty minutes, the beautiful view of the eruption over the river, as well as the rainbow that we were blessed with made this a once in a lifetime experience to share. Since this geyser only erupts every 5.5-7 hours, i feel very lucky that we happened to catch this eruption , as we did not look up eruption times before our trip <3

Geysers are hot springs with constrictions in their plumbing, usually near the surface, that prevent water from circulating freely to the surface where heat would escape. The deepest circulating water can exceed the surface boiling point (199°F/93°C). Surrounding pressure also increases with depth, much as it does with depth in the ocean. Increased pressure exerted by the enormous weight of the overlying water prevents the water from boiling. As the water rises, steam forms (watch video exploring Old Faithful's vent). Bubbling upward, the steam expands as it nears the top of the water column. At a critical point, the confined bubbles actually lift the water above, causing the geyser to splash or overflow. This decreases pressure on the system, and violent boiling results. Tremendous amounts of steam force water out of the vent, and an eruption begins. Water is expelled faster than it can enter the geyser's plumbing system, and the heat and pressure gradually decrease. The eruption stops when the water reservoir is depleted or when the system cools.

My fiance and i stopped at two seperate geyser vantage locations within the park , The Lower Geyser Basin/ Fountain Paint Pot, and the Upper Geyser Basin . All of the photos in this blog were taken at those locations :)Signs of the forces of erosion can be seen everywhere, from runoff channels carved across the sinter in the geyser basins to the drainage created by the Firehole River.

Grotto Geyser- Lower Basin

Grotto Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin in YNP, and was named in 1870. This geyser erupts about every 8 hours. The eruption is up to 10 feet high with a duration ranging from 1-10 hours.

Not all of the features in the geyser basins erupt - All of these colorful mini ponds are actually thermal features. Some of them have sections that are boiling, and the bright colors actually come from complex biological ecosystems within the springs.

The landscape is truly one of a kind, and evokes feelings of being in a fantasy realm, with the steaming ground and the big blue skies <3

The geysers were such an impressive show of natures boundless strength, and i am really glad that my amazing fiance and i were able to share this gorgeous experience.
