Election Season - Let's do Ourselves a Favor
Election seasons are usually interesting times...certainly for the mainstream media anyways as their personalities take on larger than life personas, with opinions, no matter how outlandish, consumed by the masses.
They also represent sort of a vicious cycle, where politicians tell the same old stories/lies to rile up the masses with little or no facts on ground in other to score political points.
The divisiveness caused by political representation has gotten a little more intense in the last few decades. Don't get me wrong, am not naive enough to believe that everyone can agree on everything at a particular time, so I don't think there will ever be a time we won't be divided.
What I do concern myself with though, is the loss - of energy, goodwill and actual respect that comes with dividing lines from electioneering. Friends, family and even notable intellectuals are victims of this vicious cycle.
To What End?
All for what you ask? Bragging rights and nothing more. The mere thought of what someone stands for is often more important than what the person actually does post election and politicians have used this well to their advantage. It feels good to be on the winning side, even when there are actually no benefits attached to winning. Matter of fact, it actually can mess with your state of mind if you get too caught up.
Breaking the cycle
The key to all this is not getting too attached. It is important to be able to differentiate an ideology from a representation of same. The fact that were democrats or republicans doesn't mean we should lose our senses cause of politicians. We should, in my opinion, be our biggest self critics to always ensure decisions are based on logic than irrational emotions.
Electioneering should never be a call to stupidity.
