St. Basil’s Cathedral

The official name of this Cathedral is “The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat.” This magnificent architecture is located at the south end of Red Square City, which is in Muscow, Russia. The cathedral has wild confusing colors, shapes and patterns.

The name of the cathedral was from an eccentric Russian Saint, Basil the Blessed.

History: Churches of Victory

source

Ivan the Terrible, was a formidable Tsar (Emperor) of Russia who successfully governed the Moscow and expanded its territories in the southern and eastern directions.

The rulers at that time commemorate their victories by making a monument or a structure that shows their victories and triumphs. Ivan proved that point perfectly.

When Ivan beat and captured the city of Kazan, which was his formidable enemy, he built the first church that is created from white stone to celebrate his victory over the city, which is called the Trinity church. They also built seven more churches around the white-stoned church to celebrate their other military quests.

The church has undergone a series of add-ons and changes throughout the years. What used to be a white-stoned church is now full of colors.

Architecture

The design of the cathedral is a mixture of Byzantine and Muslim architecture. The history of this landmark is a bit of a mystery. According to urban legends, it was believed that Ivan had blinded the builders in order to create a cathedral that is unique and no one can compare. The only information they have was the name of the builders of the cathedral who were Postnick Yakovlev and Barma.

Cathedral’s Plan

source

The Cathedral shaped is like the flames seen in a bonfire. The structure is composed of a central church plus eight side churches in it.

The eight churches, which are smaller are somewhat placed equally in a circle. These eight churches are designed with onion domes, while the main church has a spire with a pretty small onion dome.

The Nine Churches

Here is a list of the names of the churches including their location:

1. Intercession of the Theotokos (Central)

2. Trinity (East)

3. Palm Sunday (West)

4. Saint Gregory the Illuminator (North-West)

5. Alexander Svirsky (South-East)

6. Barlaam Khutyn (South-West)

7. John the Merciful (North-East)

8. Saint Nicholas of Velikoretsk (South)

9. Adrian and Natalia of Nicomedia (North)

The cathedral is now turned into a museum and church service is only done once a year.
