Rare Movie: Lone Wolf and Cub - FINAL CONFLICT (1993) Remastered DVD

in #blog8 years ago (edited)

Hello, fellow Steemers, today I am going to post about one of my favorite Samurai movies.

DVD cover

LONE WOLF AND CUB FINAL CONFLICT (1993)
Directed by: INOUE Akira
Cast: TAMURA Masakazu, NAKADAI Tatsuya, KOTEGAWA Yuko, SHODA Yoshi
A noble samurai serving the Shogun as 'Kogi Kaishaku-nin' (Official Executioner) is the target of a plot by the evil Yagyu Clan to take away his position and replace him with a member of their own family.
When his wife is murdered and evidence is produced that he was plotting against the Shogun the Code of Bushido calls for him and his son to commit sepuku. Instead he defies the Shogun's orders and takes up arms against his enemies, becoming an assassin for hire.
The story of Lone Wolf and Cub has been told many times, but never like this. Starring the popular Tamura Masakazu as Ogami Itto opposite film legend Nakadai Tatsuya as Lord Yagyu Retsudo the full story can finally be told. A far different feeling from the earlier versions, we see the rise and fall of the House Of Ogami as the evil Yagyu Clan plots against them. Many surprises are to be found in this finely spun tale of love, honor, hatred, and revenge... leading to a showdown like no other before it!

Well perhaps the above summary claims too much. Because those who criticize this film in a negative way have their valid points too. But I never see the point of insisting that remakes be entirely faithful to the original master-work. If they always did that, what is the point of remaking films at all? And what is the point of seeing them because we have already seen that story?

IMHO, this re-imagining is legitimate and, with it, there is an expectation that the viewing experience will be fresh and new. That can be done and due homage to the original still given.

But, of course, not all remakes are created equal. Here, we are not talking about Hollywood making a version of an Asian legend (where the reason for the re-interpretation is to transplant the characters into an American social and cultural setting - and so departure and difference from the original are essential).

This is a Japanese remake of a Japanese film series for a Japanese audience. But still the departures should be allowed. I say we should allow new directors to ask "What if?", the same as we day-dream about our own life stories and wonder what paths we might have traveled - and where we would be - if only we were given the chance, or if we had made different decisions in the past, or if our personalities had been different.

If you like Samurai movies, watch it and then form an opinion. This is a very rare movie and finding a new or used DVD to buy is not easy. I hope you enjoy it though.
