Filipino Television Dramas are Pathetic

I have observed and discussed this with family, friends, and acquaintances several times for the past few years. Even until now if the topic is about television. That Philippine television dramas really are pathetic.

Why do you say that? You unpatriotic snob!

Why, you get only less than fifteen minutes of air time per episode while you get more than fifteen to twenty minutes of commercial advertisements of crappy products or services during that program's time slot.

So you think I am just bad-mouthing the local Filipino entertainment industry or being a Hollywood stooge and just pulling your leg? I am damn serious. Just try watching one on local Philippine TV.

The mindless (and sometimes, way out of reality) crappy plots are the worst. You always get:

A. The Poor boy/girl protagonist meets the rich girl/boy and they fall for each other.

B. The rich versus the poor (class warfare) is always the open or hidden theme.

C. The downtrodden/abused protagonist rises up against his/her oppressors/enemies/abusers and gets sweet revenge (Filipinos love the underdog).

D. Someone is always having an affair with someone else (are we Filipinos really that genetically horny?).

E. There's always some kind of a homosexual character in that drama (of course, maybe the script writer or director must be one so he has to insert his persona in the script).

F. A kidnapping incident usually occurs.

G. There is always an orphan or love child/bastard character. Somebody always loses a kid in the past.

H. All the above combined in the plot.

So if you are a poor Filipino citizen who can't afford cable television or an internet connection then that is what you get on your local TV.

It is quite amazing that the Filipino masses won't protest against this systematic garbage being fed to them every day. No wonder Korean TV dramas dubbed in Filipino are popular.

Upvoted...it made me sad.

it's a declined payout kuya.

Agree and I understand how you feel about our prime time telenovela shows. 80% of the shows are crap, we should start clamoring for more worthwhile tv shows.

Right you are, lady.

So sad to think that if we started producing better shows and movies we could have more influence in the world stage like what South Korea is doing. #softpower

LOL I laughed so hard when I read this! I actually was born in the Philippines but have moved to California a long time ago. However, my parents watch TFC and ABSCBN all the time. This is very true lol.

Oh, I'm glad my post made you laugh. The truth hurts.

Lol it definitely does xD

Well.. My grandmother seems to enjoy them haha. I'm only half Filipino and never really got to learn tagalog so I don't understand much of what goes on anyway

Well, they are much like Spanish telenovelas except for the kidnapping, gay characters, and orphans parts.

This write up is hilarious but I'm basically seeing these exact themes here in the United States. The thing about homosexual characters / relationships is especially interesting because I have even seen shows here where like 2/3rds of the relationships are homosexual relationships on the shows as if that is more normal than a man and a woman together. It is sort of out of hand with that stuff.

Yes, it is an epidemic on TV now.

My favourite is 'My Dear Heart'!
