How to Decrease Swelling in Pregnant Women

in #blog5 years ago

Extra fluid in the body during pregnancy often leads to swelling, known as edema, particularly in extremities such as the legs and ankles. As the pregnancy progresses, the swelling often gets worse. Several factors make swelling worse, including the clothes you wear, water intake, body temperature, and how you stand, sit and sleep. While some prenatal swelling is normal, edema is sometimes associated with a serious condition called pre-eclampsia. Know when to contact your doctor about your swelling to protect you and your baby.

Step 1

Limit the amount of time you spend on your feet, as a standing position tends to increase ankle swelling. Sit when possible, leaving your legs uncrossed. Take occasional breaks from sitting to walk around to help your circulation.

Step 2

Elevate your legs whenever possible, either while sitting or lying in bed. Prop your legs up with pillows to get them elevated.

Step 3

Lie on your left side when you sleep or rest. This aids in circulation, which helps keep swelling down.

Step 4

Wear socks and shoes that are supportive and comfortable without being restrictive. Wear support stockings. Avoid pants with tight cuffs along the bottom that restrict blood flow.

Step 5

Stay out of the heat as much as possible, as warm environments make swelling worse. Stay in air conditioning as much as possible during warm months.

Step 6

Add protein to your diet, as your body tends to hold on to fluid if you are low on protein. Limit the amount of salt in your diet because sodium makes swelling worse. Increase your water consumption to flush the body for less water retention.

Step 7

Swim as your form of prenatal exercise. Spending time in the water helps reduce some swelling.

Step 8

Massage your legs and ankles to encourage proper circulation in the body.

Step 9

Stretch and flex the muscles in your legs and ankles throughout the day. Move your ankles in circles and move your toes around to promote circulation.

Step 10

Call your prenatal care provider if swelling comes on suddenly, is excessive or extends to the face, as this is a possible sign of pre-eclampsia. Other signs of pre-eclampsia include a headache, blurry vision, dizziness or a sudden weight increase. If only one leg is swollen and is also painful or tender, a blood clot is a possibility. Seek medical attention for these or other abnormal symptoms that accompany the swelling.
