Today, I would like to continue along my series of blogs on stones, crystals, minerals - their backgrounds and metaphysical or unique properties.....today, we will be discussing Larimar or the "Atlantis Stone". The piece you see above I purchased on my honeymoon from a little store on Nassau in the Bahamas. It was kinda pricey but heck, 'twas my honeymoon, I knew it was rare, I had a little spending money, and I just really felt drawn to it.

This stone is rare because it is literally only found in one part of the world. It is a blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. It ranges in color from white, light blue, green-blue, to deep blue. It was originally discovered in 1916, by a "Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren." He then requested permission to begin mining in that area. As the stone was not yet discovered by anyone else (that we know of), the Dominican Republic rejected the request. And that was that.

Then a mere 58 years late in 1974, near the coastal region of Barahona, a "Miguel Mendez" and a Peace Corps volunteer "Norman Rilling" happened upon this stone again. Miguel took it upon himself to name the stone -
that is, something besides "blue stone", which is what the local natives called it. He combined Larissa (his daughter’s name) and the Spanish word for sea (mar) to form Larimar. From this point, it was determined that the stones they found had been washed into the sea by the Bahoruco River. Searching upstream of this river, a source was discovered and soon the Los Chupaderos mine was formed.

Metaphysically, Larimar is aligned to the throat chakra and health of the thyroid gland.

SO WHAT DOES THIS STONE HAVE TO DO WITH THE CONTINENT OF ATLANTIS??

Larimar became also known as the "Atlantis Stone" because of the beliefs spread by multiple sources to include - a Spiritual Master who once lived in Trinidad & Tobago, claimed some islands in the Caribbean, particularly the Dominican Republic, were in fact part of the sunken continent Atlantis. Okay, so not much of a "reliable source."

We also have Edgar Cayce, who believed that part of Atlantis could be found in the Caribbean. Edward was an American Christian mystic with knowledge in the subjects of holistic medicine, reincarnation, Atlantis, and future events while in a trance. Hence why biographer, Jess Stearn, coined Cayce as "The Sleeping Prophet".
In his "trances" Cayce indicated that one would find a blue stone with extraordinary healing attributes, a description that corresponds to Larimar.

European sources also have the widespread belief that the island where Haiti and the Dominican Republic are situated, was part of the Atlantis continent.

It is well known that Larimar with its' representation of the Caribbean, exists only in one region in the world, close to Baoruco, province of Barahona, Dominican Republic, not far from the border to Haiti, and hence the popularisation of the name Atlantis Stone.

The re-appearance of Larimar in the 70's, coincides with the emergence of information about Atlantis. Many books reference Larimar when discussing theories regarding Atlantis.
Some mystics claim to feel and see the information about Atlantis carried by Larimar.

Regardless of anything, one thing is for certain, it is found in only one part of the world that coincidentally has been linked to Atlantis.
