A tribute to to my first crypto home - /r/dogecoin

in #blog7 years ago

Hey guys, this is a bit more personal than usual, however I wanted to make a more genuine blog post today to talk about my first home in the crypto space, Reddit's /r/dogecoin, how they lead me down this path, and my little thank you to them.

Reddit's /r/dogecoin, 2014

To start, I got into cryptocurrencies in 2014 through a subreddit known as /r/dogecoin. Now days I'm /u/CarsonRoscoe on the website, but at the time, I was under the account /u/SunliMin. We did some amazing things in that subreddit charity wise. They were so inspiring, I started my own charity in the hype, which proceeded to do decently well, for example in the big Doge4Water Reddit thread you can see an edit at the button which reads :

Thank you to +/u/SunliMin for trailblazing in early February, raising D1.1M for CW post.

That was my moment of fame, that edit right there. It was just a fleeting moment for many people, but to me, it was the best experience ever. I saw a charity drive I started succeed, then the Dogecoin foundation run the exact same charity drive, to the same end charity, and mention me in the post. That right there is what dreams are made of. I love that community, they inspired me with so many charity events. They were my first home.

I was in love with the community. Me and my friend (@corybralcortex's big brother) /u/DLLrul3rz began creating videogames in payment of Doge. They were small games, nothing too big, but it was the first time I mixed my passion for blockchain technology with my passion for programming. We made some nifty games, my all time favourite of them definitely being DOOMGE.

The Present

Fast forward a few years, I continued down that path. At the time, I was a highschool student. I'm now in the last year of my degree, undergoing a year long research project on blockchain technology. I'm about to release my first Smart Contract with a couple partners in the next week or two. And when I woke up this morning, I saw my crypto portfolio hit in all time high, which is almost entirely funded by leftover Dogecoin I had from my stay in /r/dogecoin back in 2014.

I don't have a lot of money, however I didn't think my Dogecoin would have helped this much. It's enough to start helping to pay for my school, which is a blessing in itself.

In memory of Amigo & honour of Dogecoin

As a thank you to /r/dogecoin, I decided to make a $100 donation to the SPCA. The SPCA is an organization here in Canada which fights against animal cruelty. Every pet I've ever owned was rescued by the SPCA. I'd like to make that donation in honour of my first dog Amigo, who passed away about a decade ago.

Much glad to read your positive experiences with Doge and crypto as a whole.

Awesome! haha

Thanks, Doge is definitely a great introduction coin into crypto.

Dogecoin may be a joke currency, but it's the community that has helped it thrive through all these years. Your charity is testament to this.

Thank you for the kind words :) The first cryptocurrency purchase I've ever done in person was actually in Dogecoin back in 2014. I drove an hour out of my town because I found out some thrift shop in Vancouver Island, Canada that accepted Dogecoin. It's definitely silly, and may never see mass adoption once it comes, but I'll always hold it out of nostalgia. Dogecoins community is definitely their best asset, and the reason it's still thrived.

Hell, I'd accept Dogecoin as payment for goods and services...
