It appears there was a female journalist named Dorothy Kilgallen wrote a piece in Newsweek pointing out that the song contained references to getting high on smoking marijuana. This journalist Dortothy Kilgallen was referred to by Ernest Hemingway as "the greatest woman writer in the world." She was found dead in 1965- the official cause- SUICIDE. Some speculate she was "SUICIDED" because she was too close to reporting on the JFK ASSASSINATION.

Kilgallen says from an inside source of information that “Puff the Magic Dragon” was a CIA Occult Bureau MK ULTRA/MONARCH “Get High, Drop Out” clandestine counter-culture project. I believe Dorothy Kilgallen.
