What’s required is not good enough

Let’s take the average 9-5 job. When you’re employed, you’re given a position description and critical task list.Whatever your role is, there will be certain tasks that you need to complete within a specified time frame. If you get all your tasks done, you’re a ‘good worker’ and you then get to remain employed. Most employers want these types of people. Come to work, do their job, go home.

There is a fundamental issue with this strategy though - it embeds you in a life that stands still while the world moves on. You grow stagnant, uninterested and later on possibly depressed. We, humans, are designed for adventure. It’s ingrained in our soul. Adventure does not necessarily mean that we need to jump on a sailboat and head off into the unknown, although that does sound enticing; it means we wake up every day excited.

But how do we get excited if we're possibly currently in a mediocre job role we hate? Firstly, there is a big difference in the way we can feel at the end of a day depending on how much effort we put into the day. I know this from experience. The days that I put in 110% effort into the day, I finish off with a sense of accomplishment. It feels good. The days where I ‘dragged my feet’ and did below what was expected, I felt horrible. Regardless of what your job is, applying maximum effort, completely changes the way you feel at the end of the day.

Most people don't operate here, they're scraping through the day waiting for knock off, so when you start applying maximum effort every day, you start to stand out. When you're going above and beyond of what's required, you start stretching your learning into new areas, you grow and new opportunities start to present themselves.

I am fully aware that many people can be in position where they are truly miserable. I understand this, but the way I see it; there are two choices - stay miserable or work your way to happiness.
