Ramblings: Charity - Morality - Witches?
Why do we give to charity? Is it to make the world a better place? Is it because we want to feel better about ourselves? Is it a nice tax offset? Do we do it out of some obligation? Or do we inherently care about other people even if we have/never will meet them?
These are just some of the questions that I have considered when thinking about the best way to promote charity in one fashion or another. They are also the questions I have asked myself about why it is something I consider worthwhile.
The answer???
It doesn't matter. Interestingly enough it would be nice for everyone to give out of compassion for our fellow humans, but in literal reality; beggars can't be choosers. Judging someones motivation is as difficult as judging their moral values. If they feel they are acting in a righteous way (and truly believe it) how can I or anyone else question them.
Often the mark of an action is asking one self: Is this something a good person would do? My definition of a good person is probably far different to that of someone living in a different culture. Sure there would be overlapping similarities, but the precedent put in place by different laws or cultural/religious teachings makes peoples thought processes completely different.
One analogy that I came up with is the medieval witch test.
Townsfolk would throw a woman into water to test if she were a witch. If she floats then she is a witch as is to be burnt at the stake. If she sunk to the river bed and drowned then she is not a witch.
This is of course an absurd test, as the woman dies either way (not to mention witches aren't actually real). Looking at this from an outsiders perspective it is easy to see how ridiculous it is. But.. if we were to have lived in medieval times it would have been seen as a common practice and it is likely that we would have struggled to see any fault in it. "We would have thought we were acting in a righteous way" in order to protect the town from witches. So people would have affirmatively answered to "Is this something a good person would do?"
Now this is of course an extreme example, but the point remains that it is difficult to judge someones actions without sharing the same development of their moral compass.
