Websites vs social media! Which is more important?

in #blog7 years ago

On one of my previous Steemit posts, someone put up a challenge: He thought we don’t need websites anymore! So I’m putting forward the pros and cons of whether having a website or not:

For: having your own website:

  1. Having a website your overhead costs are cheaper, than renting a shop in a mull or in town somewhere.
  2. They say you need a web designer! But you don’t if you use WordPress. There are plugins that make things very easy for you.
  3. Having a website that you control: Rather than building your online presence solely on a social media platform.
  4. Your website is the “Hub” of your online presence.  Social Media is there as your marketing tool.
  5. Your website is your property. You don’t have to follow the rules that there are on some social media.
  6. You have the power and control on what your website will look like. From the design to what you want to write in the content.
  7. Investing in a website is like having a business card! Having a website makes your business look more professional.
  8. You can establish yourself as an authority on your field of expertise.  Studies have shown that professional designed websites build trust and credibility. Therefore, having a website inspires greater confidence in consumers.
  9. On social media you have to summarize and have limited space. That minimizes the uniqueness of your brand, and what your company represents and stands for.
  10. With a website’s exclusive design you have the ability to personalize your brand by creating customized pages.
  11. You can add in-depth testimonials, your CV, company history, and important CTA (call-to Action) forms to your website.
  12. You can setup campaigns and support platforms to help people.
  13. Facebook now focuses its algorithm to show more posts from friends, not business pages.
  14. On you website you are not confined to a set format. On your website you can create and interlink different categories and pages to promote different products. Things don’t get lost in the meridian of time, if you can organize your website so they are easy to find.
  15. Today more people use the internet to search for products and services. By using SEO keywords people can find your page quickly. You don’t have to scroll endlessly down several posts to get what you are looking for on Social media platforms.
  16. Therefore, a website takes you beyond just social media. The scope of topics you can choose as you niche, is incredible.

For: using social media:

  1. Social media is a fun thing. Sharing and bonding with friends.
  2. Because of its one-on-one contact, customers can build friendly relationships with you.
  3. You can also check someone’s credentials and morals standards by checking what they allow on their social site.
  4. Requires little-to-no technical expertise.
  5. Your page shows up high (1st or 2nd place) in search rankings when someone’s searching for your business.
  6. If you want to, you can build your email list, raise money, sell products and a lot more, from the tabs on your Facebook page.
  7. With Facebook and WhatApp, you can keep in contact with your family, friends or staff members.
  8. You can use Facebook and Twitter as part of your online strategy to drive traffic back to your website.

Conclusion:

We need both!!

  • To spread the word about your business!
  • You can lure people back to your website through social media.
  • Social media helps inject back-links to your website.
  • It also depends on your business, product, service or skill, to which gives you more visually.

Here is someone assessment of the social media sharing capacity:
Facebook 72-48%      StumbleUpon 20-7%      YouTube 9-7%      Twitter 5-4%      Reddit 6-2%      Pinterest 7-2%      Digg .4-.2%      LinkedIn .3%      Other .8-.7%

I think that social media is great, but like you said, websites allow far more creativity and personalisation. I feel like having a nice website is far more likely to attract customers than a well made social media page. Further, the ability to completely control a website is important. While social media is great, think about how people use it to share news for example... They share links to other websites.

Thanks for your additional input. It's much appreciated. Yes, we need back-links from Social media.

great post artguru! keep it up! and thanks again for following!

As to my own experience, I found Reddit gave me far greater input, than Facebook or Twitter! Which was quite a surprise to me.

Yes having a website is good for business and for social media.

I think both of them!

I agree !

Having a Website is a Must thing now a days. Great Post. Do follow me and and vote my posts and I will do the same for you :)

Yeah, I do think we need both. Although right now the mainstream trend is just to use social media. People most likely think that since Facebook gives you your own page, it's a website. I've even seen some domains pointed directly to FB pages.
