Disclaiming Western feminism

in #blog6 years ago
Feminism emerged as a social and political movement in the late thirteenth century and developed during the XIX century, aims at the liberation of women in various areas in which it was not taken into account and that, after some time and a excellent campaign, spread to almost the entire globe and caused millions of people to demand equal opportunities from Quito to Moscow, thus achieving all the benefits women have today, empowering them in such a way that many of the most influential people of the world are women: presidents, prime ministers and Nobel prize winners, which gives us to understand the value that women have today. However, it is notorious that the objectives have not been achieved in their entirety, currently there is still that archaic mentality (especially in the East) that pretends that the woman is a subordinate of the man and, therefore, that the struggle for this cause is still valid.

As everything, this current has been evolving, its object has changed as the proposed challenges have been achieved and its acceptance has been greater, but this has contributed to its principles and its north (empowering women and promoting equality of genres) have been distorted, or at least that many of the groups preaching distort the message, and so it is that feminism went from fighting for the rights of women to seek to denigrate man at all costs to make it more important in the society.
Although it has been a controversial subject since its inception, lately it has become one of the biggest controversies in the world; we hear more often the phrase "I am a feminist" and is increasingly involved in conversations but what do these people understand by feminism?
In America modern feminism has become totally denaturalized and has come to serve as an excuse for behaviors that sometimes border on the ridiculous, we see women in Argentina in the street naked or with unseemly clothes protesting the "slut-shaming" translated into Spanish as a prostitute and dress codes, young people who post on social networks photos of colored hair in their armpits demanding that they stop stigmatizing the hairiness and ladies with posters with messages such as "Down with patriarchy" as if this really allowed women to develop better in society. It is not necessary to have doctorates in sociology to note that the main idea by which this movement was born is no longer the one that sustains it.

If we compare the profile of Latin American women with those of the Middle East, it can be noted that the problems suffered by the former are trifles compared to the many situations that are experienced every day in Africa and Asia: only in the Congo every 15 seconds A woman suffers from genital mutilation, the conditions in which she has to live are precarious, they can not opt for higher education, they can not manage or vote, much less decide who they are going to marry. Whether it is by religion or culture, it is unfair to live under stress and be treated as a property that can be negotiated. There if a change is needed. There, feminism is needed.

Fortunately, on this side of the pond things are different, here women are, in my opinion, overprotected between non-governmental organizations and campaigns against violence; in Venezuela, for example, there is a law dedicated to controlling this problem (Organic Law on the right of women to a life free of violence) and, like this country, many include in their legal system mechanisms to protect females. And while this is a breakthrough, I also see it as a setback. Let me explain: I do not say that protecting the female population is wrong, not at all, but giving preferences to one part of society to consider it more important or weaker than the other, overlapping it to the male population, that's wrong.
Why are there no laws that protect the integrity of man or non-governmental organizations that defend it? If gender equality is fostered, it can not be claimed that by excluding and belittling one of the sexes a balance is reached. We need to see our neighbor as equal. We need coherence between our thoughts and our actions. We need to stop discrediting. We need, without a doubt, to be more human.

To achieve the goals that this generation has, people need to know, not be influenced, they need to see the reality of others to realize everything they have, stop complaining about small things and reinforce great achievements. If we have so much, what do we complain about?
