HONEYBEES
Did you know?
Male Honeybees die immediately after mating.
About a week after coming out from their cells, the Drones (male honeybees) are ready to mate and once they've done that, they die.
Honeybees are flying insects and are found almost everywhere. All bees feed on nectar and pollen. Almost one-third of human food supply depends on insect Pollination. Honey bees live in colonies and are classified into three types viz, Queen Bee, Worker Bees and Drones.
Queen Bees
Queen Bee also called as the Mother Bee as she is the only fertile member of the family, she lays up to 1500 eggs a day. Queen Bee mates with over 15 Drones over a 3 day period and then return to the Hive. She has a lifespan of 3 to 4 years.
Worker Bees
All worker bees are females and they live for not more than 45 days, they make-up about 99% of each colony's population.
The Worker bee does different task in different stages of her life like feeding the larvae, tending to the queen, cleaning the hive, collecting food, guarding the colony and building honeycomb. A Forager will visit 50-100 flowers before heading home and she will repeat the process several times, she visits up to 2000 flowers a day.
Drone Bees
Male bees are called drones and their only purpose is to mate with the Queen bee and they die immediately after mating. If they don't mate they can live up to 90 days. Drone bees don't sting.
Honeybees are as scared of you as you are of them
When a honey bee stings a person, it cannot pull the barbed stinger back out. It leaves behind not only the stinger, but also part of its abdomen and digestive tract, plus muscles and nerves. This massive abdominal rupture kills the honey bee. Honey bees are the only bees to die after stinging. So next time you see a bee, don't try to harm it and it will not sting you.
I know this information about bees. But thanks for the post anyway ! I really love these industrious insects :)
