There are a few things to take into consideration when converting crypto. The rate your getting, the fee and the ease.
Blocktrades is easy to use and they find a good rate among available prices. If you have the technical knowledge, the time and stomach you would be better searching for the cheapest exchange at the time you are making your trade which varies from minute to minute.
I am also surprised at how much blocktrades charges but there is a trade-off.
If you already have a Binance account, Blocktrades isn't any more convenient. In fact, Binance gives you the ability to quickly transfer Steem to and from Tether, allowing for seamless swing and day trading so that one can buy low and sell high. Signing up for an account isn't exactly complicated either.
There are also other services out there that are exactly the same as Blocktrades but give you a better deal and have more crypto options. I've used shapeshift a few times but Steem is currently disabled.
Blocktrades gets away with robbery because Steemit points people there and they aren't transparent about how many fees they are taking.
