ADVANCE CALCULUS- MY WORST NIGHTMARE IN COLLEGE

Back in college, in my second year as an Engineering Student, one of my most hated courses was Advance Calculus. I just hated it no matter how nice the lecturers are. Funny thing is that most of its applications are in Electrical and Thermodynamics engineering modules and as an Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering student; this was my cue all through college. During a semester exam, I had studied wildly for this fearsome course but still failed. I mean, I had already graded myself when I only attempted two out of five excruciating questions.

Nevertheless, despite my poor performance in Calculus, something happened. My lecturer had a slight accident and lost some of the score sheets and student scripts (so we heard), he didn’t want to conduct another exam for just Electrical students who had their exam booklets missing because the course was an all option across Engineering faculty. So he gave all students affected 10 marks in bonus and additional 8 marks to students with missing booklets which I was among. The eighteen marks pushed me into (58) C-, just two marks shut of a C+. Although I had prayed and even fasted not to rewrite that course, yet it still feels like one of the best miracle I had experienced in my life.

My question back then was, is this a religious thing or anyone could just be hopeful like I did years ago? Well, after pondering so long on it, I would say it is a personal conviction and not an opinion for anyone reading this to follow because each of us as humans has a unique way of looking forward to something we do not deserve.

HOPE/FAITH AND WORK ACTION ARE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL

Hope and Faith work s simultaneously, that’s a general fact, or I will say belief. Having faith in the unseen or yet to come is hope and hoping for that good thing earnestly is faith. However, this two has a certain clause to them been active.

“Even so faith, if it hath no work is dead being alone”- James 2:17

True is his verse from the Holy Bible, in my case, there was a tiny work done even though I was not satisfied with my work done during the exam, maybe lack of interest or fear; I can’t say why the course remained my nightmare. But the two questions I attempted was my work done, tasking considering the number of students who eventually failed that same course despite the bonus marks. Their work input was zero as a result of not coming for the exam and not even making an attempt at the questions given, certainly, they cannot be as expectant as me because they had no prior actions, inputs, and work done.

As much as people believe in these principles of Hope and Faith, they neglect the factor of direct proportionality of hope/faith with actions/work. To be honest, it is not a bad idea to be hopeful, but it could be done foolishly. It is a process that takes more than sitting idle and expecting something out of nothing.

Also, keeping an optimistic mind is a fine idea; there is nothing wrong in hoping for a better life. After all, hope is the resolution in any crisis, having that belief that you will scale every difficult moment is the strongest form of faith.

In conclusion, do not be delusional; have a little work put in place to make your hope valid. A farmer who planted no seed after tilling the farm soil would be insane to be expecting a bountiful harvest. Invest in your Hope and watch your faith grow large even though what you “need in size is just that of a mustard seed”. Thanks for reading.

when I only attempted two out of five excruciating questions.

LOL…I think most of us have been there at one time or other…I’m sure on at least one occasion in my early years, I started off with the perfect intro only to digress into a pathetic (lol) discussion of things that had zero to do with the question….Hmmm...I think politicians call that ughm, filibustering.

slight accident

Ha! No accidents; but, millions of Divine Interventions, aka Divine Favors, as I prefer to see these unexpected blessings as…Hallelujah!

(58) C-
Wow…what a break…in the US 75 is a C; a 17-point difference…argh!!!

prayed and even fasted

You did far more than just hope @oluwoleolaide.

It simmers down to (Hebrews 11:1) Now, faith is the evidence of things not seen; and the hope for things to come.

That said, as you noted in your post, “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:14).

So, pretty much to restate what you said, hope is an outcome of faith (what you believe for) which can’t occur without work.

Best regards.

Peace.

Wow

Thanks for the wonderful feedback ma'am. You said exactly what my late mom said to me back then. She said "I hoped and prayed"

Even though my faith is so tiny, i know i just need a mustard seed size of it then i pray in my own little way. Not all my prayers have been answered though, but i still believe in the power of Prayers.

exactly what my late mom said to me

Wow is right! Perhaps, the transference of words was just God anointing you with a little gift to 'hear' from your beloved mother. Indeed, He does work in mysterious ways. Kinda' like receiving the fragrance of a loved one crossed over...just out of the blue...no one's around in a closed setting, and their signature fragrance just waffs through the air...things like that...Makes me tear up thinking about those gifts.

Not all my prayers have been answered though,

Wanna bet???????? ;+) All prayers are answered; just not in the way we 'hoped'...Thanking God for that as I speak!!!! God always answers in ways that are best for keeping us in line with His path for our life.

As an example...someone praying for a million dollars gets a job paying minimum wage instead. It looks like the prayer went unanswered; but, it was answered by God in the way that would be best for the individual...to get that million would have meant the person leaning on the worldly things, instead of God, for his needs/wants/yens.

The important thing is to never cease praying if you believe in the spirit, it is what God wants you to have. (Matthew 7:7). Some prayers are formed from a vision. If the vision tarries, wait for it (Habakkuk 2:3).

Best regards.

Peace.
