Blockchain Memory Project - View from my many desks

in #blockchainmemoryproject7 years ago (edited)

My first year anniversary on steemit passed by unnoticed and with no celebration this past Friday the 13th, as my son had spent the week in hospital and was discharged on Friday the 13th, thankfully in much better health!

Needless to say the week preceding that was very stressful, thankfully I was distracted at times by steeming.

My older son @deanoza who introduced me to steemit, stopped steeming a long while ago. He coincidentally joined the platform exactly a year before me, on 13 July 2016! Yep, he could have been a whale by now had he continued!

This Friday the 13th coincidentally was a real nice lady, @goldendawne's first anniversary. This amazing steemian gives so much of her time to make this platform a better place, and ran a contest as a way of giving back and asked us to write about or just show our favorite place to work on steemit.

I missed that deadline, but it got me thinking of the number of desks I use these days in my current role of running our little BnB; with my second job being writing and cooking for steemit :)

I will make this a #blockchainmemoryproject, initiated by another awesome and inspirational steemian, the author @ericvancewalton.

First off I will show you my absolute favourite desk - this one my dining room table, where all the action takes place - I can watch the pots and pans; enjoy the sun and the view and still chatter in between.

As I'm running a BnB, there are two things that I always have to carry wherever I go, and that is my cell phone and my hard copy booking calendar.

Prospective guests generally think of booking holiday accommodation at the strangest of hours, plus they're from all over the world; business guests of course call during decent office hours. My office therefore has to be open at all times to respond to booking requests.

With the huge number of online booking sites, people shop around all the time, and of course the early bird always catches the worm. Generally I have been successful when my response time has been fast.

I will never forget how I woke up one night at 2am for no reason, then heard my phone beep with a booking request just made by a local guest. Normally I would leave it to the morning, but that night something told me to reply.

These guests were in the process of emigrating, had sold all their belongings already except their car, and were due to fly out within a week.

The young man's mother had just undergone brain surgery which led to complications so they stayed on; they became like children to us.

Fortunately the Mom recovered well and they left to seek new pastures across the ocean.

We still keep in touch with them, hoping to one day meet their offspring :)

As we had bookings for our spacious two bedroom cottage, this extended stay led to us quickly closing off a wing of our home and turn it into Lily's Loft, a beautiful luxurious sunny studio unit for our couples and single business guests.

Lily's Loft has been a little haven for many guests after our young couple Marc and Kerry - a young locum school teacher, students on training courses, those with ill family, here for special celebrations, sporting events and many more.

Nowadays I have learnt to stop online booking request notifications late at night, but this does not stop direct bookers calling me at all hours!

Here is my office proper where I love working in summer as it's lovely and cool, with the view of the garden pathway leading to our two bedroom self-catering Lily's Cottage

My office follows me wherever I go; sometimes to the theatre, the beach, the malls, it's always there!

This was my view when I stayed with my son in Johannesburg - they live in an area with large properties, beautiful tree filled gardens; one would never guess you're within the bounds of a city!

Stunning Aloes greeted me on arrival at my son's cottage.

Do I ever want to go back to my nine to five job with teatime at ten & three, lunchtime at one and no leaving the office before the clock strikes five?

I think not; although it was right at the time!

I really enjoy the freedom I have now where I can do my BnB admin work in between steeming, and put the closed sign up when we take little breaks during the quiet season.

I truly believe I now have the best of both worlds, still chatting to my steemit friends whilst running my little BnB where I get to meet people from all walks of life and from all over the world as well!

Hope you enjoyed this little insight into the views from my many desks, and a huge thank you to all my active followers for making my first year in the steemit world so fascinating!

As you know, I am new to the web, and newer browsing your blog, and today I see that you are a very interesting person that you serve as an example, since you remain active and very good looking, little by little I will get to know you and take good tips, how to live after the children grew up, I am of the third age, and it has cost me a bit not to be active in the work stage and to reach the age that no one hires you because of age, and it turns out that we are a lot more productive after 50 years, proud to see your cozy workplace, greetings, @lizelle

Hi @perlanacarada, thank you so very much for your lovely comments, I see you're a granny already, something I'm still waiting for ;) Your blog looks real interesting as well, will check it out :)

It's a pity that we are separated by the distance I'd love to be close to enjoy that nice lodging I love to travel, I hope you'll soon be a grandmother, you'll notice that you're going to be a very lovely grandmother, greetings @lizelle

This excellent post was included in the latest issue of The Inbox Runneth Over. Stop by when you have a minute and see what else I found along the trail. Your companions here are all interesting in their own way, and your support for this project and especially its occupants would be very much appreciated. Thank you for everything. Have a lovely day!

Yes, I'm finally getting around to posting this comment. Don't ask.

Happy belated Steemit-versary, @lizelle! The time goes quickly, doesn't it? I'm so glad you found freedom from the 9-5 job. Nothing beats living the life that you choose to.

Thank you @ericvancewalton, you're so right, I'm just loving it, it's people like you that make this new world so amazing!

Thank you my friend! The true value of this platform is the ability to connect with incredible people such as yourself from all over the world.

Wonderful article and congrats on anniversary!

Thank you so very much @deanliu, really appreciate you stopping by :)
A warm hallo from Durban, South Africa, it's just after 8pm here ;)

I would have to agree, Steemit does allow us the freedom to work on it when we want to. I could never go back to a regular job. Your desk looks similar to mine...cluttered. But as long as know where everything is, who cares?

You're right hey @cecicastor, and tomorrow's another day, at least I can say that now ;)

What a great post lizelle! Great glimpse into your B&B world. I can't imagine the people you meet, so fun. (Although I know ALOT of work) And I'm sure your guest love your amazing creations. Mr. Bird and I have stayed in a few B&B over the years, so enjoyable and always loved the hosts! (I hope your son is okay!!)

You're right granny Bird, it is a lot of work especially if you suffer from OCD, I run up and down to the units till everything is spic and span, but love meeting the guests ;)
My son is on the mend now thank you!

I really enjoyed reading your post and loved the pathway down to cottage picture. I don't have as many desks as you and also prefer sitting in the cooler part of my home when reading posts.

Thank you for sharing with your very easy to read, writing style.

Thank you so much for your awesome comments @phi23, really appreciate it:)

Thats beautiful. It feels so homey and relaxing. You got a beautiful view @lizelle. Working on looking over the nature is always the best.

Thank you @sherylneil, you're so right, it's awesome being so close to nature!

Welcome back.. my brother in law sold his bed and breakfast a few years ago. Lots of beds to make. Yours is lovely, if even I make it your way ...well you know the rest. Booking me a room.

Yes you're right it's a lot of work, who knows, you may just pass through here, never know where life takes one hey!

Great place you have. I am glad you got your health back.
In other words, welcome home back to Steemit. @lizelle

Thank you very much @rebeccabe!
