Porn’s Business Model Redefined

There are over 150,000 adult websites worldwide, through which customers can view porn. That’s a lot of producers, producing a lot of content and a lot of it is available for free or is pirated. This is because, like a lot of internet business models today, adult content is ad-supported, easily copied or pirated and easily shared online.

In this situation, you’d expect that the content producers, who aren’t making money from a pay-per-view model, would be making a lot of money from the advertising that is shown around the content they produce. But that isn’t how it works. Todays content producers make little off their content and in the case it is pirated they make nothing. All that is about to change forever. Revolutionary. Disruptive.

In the adult content industry today, the advertiser doesn’t pay the content producer. They pay an advertising network, who then pays the agent of the content producer. Each of these parties take a cut and, because the content producer doesn’t usually control the distribution network, very little of the revenue is shared with them.

In fact, 62% of today’s online adult revenue is generated by traffic. Very little of that revenue is earned by advertisers, almost none by content producers and absolutely none is given to viewers. Only 24% of adult revenue is actually generated from adult content.

This state of affairs is not just affecting content producers, it’s also limiting the content that’s made available to viewers. Since the viewer isn’t paying for content, advertisers call the shots. The viewer may have the benefit of getting to watch video content for free but it probably won’t be what the viewer really wants to watch.

The return on investment that advertisers can achieve is questionable too. Viewers either skip through ads or use ad blocking software, so this lack of attention is causing advertisers to rethink the existing model.

Also, when content is pirated no one gets paid and everyone suffers but the pirates. Of course pirates make no content, so aiding them is a sure fire way to kill content production.
