I remember the first anime I watched. It was Bleach by Tite Kubo. The drawing style, unique abilities, the silly idea that I could learn Japanese by watching it (haha), something just clicked inside me that made me fall in love with this "new type of cartoon". In university, my roommate turned out to be a long time fan with an insane collection. Needless to say, most of my entertainment was indoors.

I soon found out about Cosplay. Cosplay(short for Costume Play) is a subculture of expression and appreciation of anime characters. This involves dressing like the characters they like, acting like them and even short plays often reliving popular scenes in the anime.

The term 'cosplay' was invented by Japanese reporter, Nobuyuki Takahashi, after he attended Worldcon in Los Angeles in 1984 and it has since stuck. _Wiki

Cosplay is free for all to partake in and it is not unusual to see genders switched( that is, women dress and male characters or vice versa).

As a long time anime fan and avid manga reader, cosplay has always been something of interest. Sadly, being in Africa has certain ...err.. constraints. One of them is finances. When you're making less than a dollar a day you really don't have the money for fan art, makeup and costumes. There is also the issue of orders and shipments, high quality cameras and stage props.
As with all things, having a market is key to every product. Fortunately, the Cosplay industry has exploded over the last 10years with many people around the globe now taking an interest in the Japanese-themed animation culture.
