US Treasury funds blockchain research in transportation

A department of the U.S. Department of Transportation is looking for companies that want to use blockchain to turn US road construction upside down - funded with several million dollars.

As the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) - part of the US Department of Transportation - February 3 in a wide-ranging announcement announced , by financing the research of three technical areas, including block chain , for a "more efficient" Road Administration. Funding of up to four million US dollars would be open to any company that will present a “revolutionary” proposal to change road construction by March 20, 2020. They expect to conclude four to six contracts.

This program supports scientific research and studies that promote the current knowledge and the latest science and technology used in the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and management of road construction within the country,

explains the FHWA in the broad announcement (BAA). They name the strategic goal as follows:

Strategically, this research will enable and accelerate the necessary development of revolutionary approaches, methods and breakthroughs to drive innovation and significantly improve the efficiency of road traffic.

This means that transportation is another area that is keen to experiment with blockchain technology. This will fulfill several functions within the project: The main focus is on the management of secure certificates for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure applications as well as new pricing on highways.

Car manufacturers are at the forefront

So far, the mobility sector has been researching this area under the name MOBI . This is an association of leading automotive companies, including BMW, General Motors and Ford. The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative is currently testing a digital identification system for vehicles. There the lifespan, the maintenance history and the ownership history of the vehicle are saved on an inventory book, i.e. the blockchain. It also enables automatic payment of toll and parking fees.

The recurring problem with the data

Furthermore, as part of the announcement by the Ministry of Transport, projects are also being sought to help organize freight data more effectively. The government thus receives protected, anonymized data relating to route planning and scheduling. This includes the collection, transfer and delivery of the goods. According to the FHWA, this is inevitable to improve security. It is also helpful for "effective political and public investment decisions".

Geofencing feat. Blockchain

However, there is also little information about road use and its surfaces. Here, the blockchain would be an instrument for geofencing. In other words, street segments or surfaces can be located more easily - anywhere: from highways to urban street canyons to rural areas. This way, it is found out whether some roads can carry heavy commercial vehicles permanently at all.

Will driving become more expensive?

So far, some automakers and blockchain companies have already developed digital wallets for toll payments. The FHWA builds on this. She plans to revise prices on the highways. Using the blockchain, the traffic authorities negotiate various "dynamic" and "auction-based" mechanisms, in short: fees. This also includes those for the use of road sections that are at risk of congestion. A fee for using the road at peak times is also under discussion. In particular, this could encourage large commercial vehicles to drive on highways and busy roads at night.

Australia invests billions in road map

Meanwhile, the FHWA is not the only Ministry of Transport that has dedicated itself to researching blockchain technology. The Australian Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology has also recently published a "Blockchain Roadmap". It describes a comprehensive redesign of the continent's infrastructure. Australia advocates blockchain integration for this purpose. As the Sydney Morning Herald on February 7 reported , hopes Minister Karen Andrews, a sector worth around 175 billion dollars (259.4 billion AUD) to create.
