They can't interfere with the protocol itself, but they can sure as hell make it difficult to do business. The Bitlicense is a good example of what the "regulators" are capable of.
The good thing is, there are many countries eager for crypto business, and eventually all those bright minds and entrepreneurs will leave the countries trying to create obstacles!
