World of Ether: The First Blockchain Based Videogame

in #blockchain6 years ago (edited)

You might thinking Cryptokitties was the first blockchain based game yet I prefere calling cryptokitties collectibles.

The World of Ether is a real game with legit battling features.

World of Ether is a decentralized collectible dueling game that lives inside of a browser on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. It is now in a prelaunch stage and users can start off by buying eggs (which will hatch into monsters as soon as game launches). The game is centered around the collection, breeding, and fighting of monsters. Each monster is stored inside of a contract and referenced by the platform.

Each monster's strength is measured in battle points. Ex, a particular monster may come in a range of 800 - 1,200. These battle points are used inside of battles to produce a winner. Higher BP increases your probability of winning a battle, but anything can happen.

Monsters are broken into 4 grades of rarity: common, uncommon, rare, and legendary. These monsters fall into 5 types:

Staff says: "In order to keep the game decentralized it is of utmost importance that the author of the game cannot flood the market with extra monsters, harming the marketplace. However, because the game may need more monsters in the future, there is a very minimal chance that upon breeding, a new species can come into existence. This species would then be added to the list of possible monsters.
Because of this feature, there will eventually be well over 200 monsters. Our servers will hold the artwork for these new monsters, but the battle points, type, and rarity of the new monster will be generated at random through our algorithm, so as to maintain decentralization for the platform."

Because WOE runs indeed on Ether, each egg you purchase by Ether.
As Eggs are essentially smart contracts, you can store them and trade them as they were tokens. This in my opinion gives the game a speculative face also:
They started of with an IEO (initial eggs offering) at a reasonable price: 0.00035 ETH
Although, each egg sold increased the price of the next egg. As almost 900 eggs have been sold already, price for the next purchased egg is sitting at around 0.3 ETH or in FIAT language, $400. That is insane!

The amount of Ether used to buy an egg goes to the developer of the project of which this is how they're gonna earn a living.

You might be thinking: "ok so 0.3 eth for an egg, and what if this game ends up being shitty and no one plays it? Will the value of eggs go down?"
The answer is no: the team stated that the price will never decrese or reset. Atually, prices will increase for each sold egg and by a +15% at launch. So early adopters and buyers are definitely already making loads of money out of this IEO.

Moreover, what if it actually becomes popular ? Demand for these creatures will increase and those holding to older eggs would have the possibility to sell their eggs to other people easily setting price at a lower price than the game offers them at yet much higher than what they bought them at.

Now, I'm not that big of a gamer. I'm more an investor and I'm actually intrigued by the speculative part of this game. I'm pondering whether to buy an egg or not.

What is your idea? Would you buy one?

Finding it difficult to decide what to think about this in regards to the entry level being around 400 for 1 egg. It just seems, to me anyway, exorbitant to be asking 400 for an egg that will hatch into a luck of the draw monster and if you want your monster to breed, you're probably wanna get a pair at least. The price point is certainly not an invitation to all, but is that the point - to weed out the not so serious buyers? On the fence.

Good point. I think we are still in very early stage and most of the people buying eggs are just interested in the financial part. They are actually investing and speculating on a game... Such a game cannot be massively adopted (no chance by kids anyway) if entry level is at least 400 dollas

Interesting. I see this as being more sustainable than CryptoKitties.
