FarmaTrust//Safeguarding the health of the World!

Few weeks back, something real strange happened to me. I woke up one morning feeling extremely tired and lazy after a long night rest and as strange as it seemed, i decided to take a day off from my normal routine thinking that i needed more rest. Spent a whole monday resting knowing how costly it could be for me but it was not totally my fault, my body was acting up on me. The next day as i continued my rest, my condition deteriorated and i became more confused,lazier, weaker, alarmed and anxious. Questions like "are these the signs of death" popped my head and it was then i decided to take action. Being a religious individual i decided to put it in prayers, then picked up my phone and put a call through to my sister who happens to be a pharmacist. She was quite amused herself as i narrated my ordeal to her and she actually spent about two minutes of my time telling me how fearful i was and that just a drug or two could put me out of my present state. After the call, i went for the drugs she suggested and immediately started taking them.

I really did not know if it would be safe to say that a miracle actually happened within 18hours or am just exaggerating the whole thing?. Lo and behold i regained myself gradually within that 18hours and felt relieved. Now my point here is, not like my prayers did not work or something but it did work through a small moulded substances that we call drugs.

A world without drugs could be a boon but the question we should ask ourselves is could we really do without them?

Drugs have been part of our culture since the middle of the last century. Popularized in the 1960s by music and mass media, they invade all aspects of society. As tiny and liquid-like as some of them may be, they could work like magic.

Critical Reasoning

Now, lets imagine the imaginable from my short story:
• What if the drugs i rushed to buy from the retail pharmacy outlet were counterfeit?

• ‎‎What if the drugs were just too expensive for me to purchase?

The answer to these questions are not far fetched and quite simple. On the short and long run, they both lead to death. I probably would have been dead by now if i took counterfeit drugs and for the case that i could not afford to purchase the drugs, i obviously would have found myself running from pillar to post in my sick state looking for money to be able to buy the drugs and that would eventually lead to death as well. We all know now that the drug you thought would cure you could also as well kill you. In most cases, we tend to apportion blames to the pharmaceutical company; for thinking they made a substandard and deadly drugs or even the retailer who has no idea of what transpired along the line in the supply chain.

why make a drug to kill rather than cure? Leaving fear in our minds that medicine could be either a kill or cure.

Have you not sometimes imagined if there could be a way you as a drug user could check if a drug was fake or not. Wanting to have an assurance about a certain product is never a crime, this is indeed a reason why some of us have such imaginations.

Now lets stop imagining!

Why other previous known system failed to checkmate counterfeit drugs thoroughly

Few years back, the National Association of Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in my country "Nigeria" employed several approaches believed to be effective in eradicating counterfeit drugs. One of such approaches was the introduction of Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) and this service was quite simple. This service involved collaboration between Gsm operators and pharmaceutical companies. It entails using mobile phones to confirm the authenticity of the drugs before consuming it by simply scratching the silver panel on the outer part of the drug; after which you send the 10-digit number that appeared on the scratched silver panel to a specified code and in a short while, you will receive an SMS that will clearly explain whether or not the drug you are about buying is genuine.

No doubt that this was a very innovative idea but it failed because across the supply chain(from manufacturers-consumers) alot could happen and things could be altered. It very necessary that all activities across the supply chain needs to be recorded and serialized drugs must be tracked across the unbroken chain of custody throughout the supply chain for transparency, efficiency and immutability sake.

The Future of Genuine Products in the blockchain World

It is no news that blockchain technology has already started taking over the world and I do not need to lecture you more on blockchain technology because many of you probably know even much more about it than i do. But what i would want to place emphasis on would be "blockchain and supply chain" and if i were to be asked about both chains, i would say it is almost a match made in heaven.

Blockchain is a protocol for a digital ledger that enables proof of ownership and the transfer of ownership from one entity to another without using a trusted third party intermediary and this is totally almost exactly what the supply chain is about.
