Is Lubin serious about a blockchain ID?! A digital ID card, which contains the collection of all your past reputation, medical records, etc, etc? Is he joking? This is big brother 2.0, how can anyone be excited about this?
the whole point about a blockchain-based ID is that YOU CONTROL what info goes out to whom. "big brother" would only have as much info through that identity gateway as YOU allowed them.
dig in and do some proper research, and you'll begin seeing the whole of potentials such a system holds...
From what I understand, reputation is not controlled by yourself. If someone has unpopular views, it'll be easy to gang up on them and kill their digital ID reputation FOREVER. There'll be no forgetting. Something stupid you did in your teens will chase you for the rest of your life. Permanent ID records are practical and convenient but I don't think the repercussions are being fully thought through.
in one sense, reputation is controlled by yourself - given it is your actions that are the primary cause of its direction. though of course, I know what you mean, and acknowledge the counter-perspective...
one main component to the digital identity piece seems to be segmented aspects of identity - only certain parts of info would be available when given permission for use in a certain system, platform, context, etc. i.e. the example is often used of split identities through the same larger system - one for business social media for LinkedIn, another completely separate for a personal social media site like Facebook, one entirely different for a gaming community, one completely separate for financial info that you could grant access to a financial institution if applying for a loan, separate component for medical records if dealing with health care or insurance company, etc. yet, none of the info would be available to any party unless you specifically granted them access permission. this isn't as much a matter of a government-run/controlled system, but a decentralized one - again, YOU being the shot-caller as to which components of your data would be accessible to governments or any other party, for what purposes...
I'm not sure the individual would be in control as much as the services he wanted to use would be in control. For example if you wanted to apply for a loan, you'd be required to show them the parts of your identity that the loan provider wanted to see. So eventually if all services require to see your whole identity, that will become the norm. Furthermore, it won't be difficult to legislate what parts of you identity are required to be shown to government bureaucracy.
Bottom line being that although it may start as giving the individual control of its own identity, ultimately if it takes off, it will be the parties which you interact with that dictate how much of the identity they want to see/copy/share. A current example of this is mobile phone apps. The apps dictate how much of your phone they want to use/see. And if you don't agree then you can't use them. I work in marketing and I can see already the immense value of this accurate ID/reputation data to advertisers.
Trust me, digital IDs will not go unexploited and un-abused for long. And I'm surprised that folks which support decentralisation of power don't realise this yet.
Oh not to mention hacks. People loose crypto to hacks all the time, why would ID be any different? The consequences of loosing your ID to a hacker who wants to impersonate you may end up being way more catastrophic than loosing a few bitcoins.
Solid blog. Really appreciate you bring this to our attention. Feeling sorry for all the uneducated investors that will loose a shitload of money in this high risk crypto market. This is quite an interesting website I found: https://www.coincheckup.com The site lets you check all there is to know about the team, product, communication transparency, advisors and investment statistics on every crypto. No need to feel sorry for anyone. No one can expect easy windfalls - investment is serious business that requires investment in knowledge as well as money. Those who fail to do so pay the costs for lessons gained only through the experience of mistakes. All is fair game... ;-)

you're jumping to conclusions too quickly.
