LYMPO: EARTH SHAKING ECOSYSTEM OF WELLNESS AND SPORTS DATA

INTRODUCTION
The Mobile Health and Sports Data: A Rather Sick Industry
The mobile wellness and sports data industry is in desperate need of a figurative surgical
and clinical attention. Why so? Well, in 2016 alone, the estimated total number of mobile health apps increased 57 per cent leading to a staggering 3.2 billion app store downloads.
It is on record that 52 per cent of mobile phone users gather health-related information
(on fitness, weight loss, exercise, women’s health, sleep, medication, etc) using their mobile phone, leading to a significant increase in the sports and wellness sector, an increase of 90 billion dollars from 2005 as against 46 billion dollars prior to 2005.
The diagram representation below show in percentages what people are gathering.

Why, then, is the industry ‘sick’? Well, the data which users track every day, sadly, remains confined by a single provider or a small network of partners. Hence, the unlimited number of users has no way of sharing these data – something that could improve people’s health significantly. This is because although the world has become a ‘global village’, there is no cross-platform fitness and wellness data exchange platform which could provide infinite opportunities for all key players in this market: personal trainers, gyms, sports apparel and healthy food producers, health insurance companies, etc. In a nutshell, health and wellness market lacks connectivity.

Other challenges
According to the World Economic Forum in 2011, personal data is an asset. Of course among all data classes health-related data is like a gold mine, a most valued and expensive asset. As it stands, our personal data is not our personal asset. This is partly because the companies whose products we are using are busy collecting our data and generating profits from it. The user generating this ‘goldmine’ data cannot aggregate, share and earn money from it. Moreover, since there is no platform that connects all the major players, the industry cannot unlock its full potential for the benefit of all humanity.
There is another big concern for users. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that “many health apps may be sharing patients’ health data without their knowledge. In a nutshell, we are not the owners of one of the most valuable assets we have, our health-related data, although we constantly gather this data voluntarily or involuntarily.
That is not all. The market in the mHealth sector is horribly segmented. Most apps focus on one specific area, while each of the providers gathers only very specific information, thus lacking an overall picture. There is never any reward mechanism for a user to transfer data from one app provider to another. These challenges make it difficult for a user to have all generated data in one place. While such a data set would be very valuable for getting feedback from sports or mindfulness coach, physical therapist and even a general practitioner, it remains scattered among a variety of apps and devices.

CAN BLOCKCHAIN ADDRESS THE BIGGEST FITNESS/WELLNESS DATA MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS?
The answer is yes! How? Registering permissions to access patient-generated data on blockchain, users are empowered to control who can access their data, and under which conditions along with other functionality thereby fulfilling data protection regulation standards. This functionality enables individuals to be the owners of their precious data asset – data that might have been generated from information originating from a variety of data sources, ranging from electronic medical records provided by hospitals, clinics and doctors, to fitness/wellness data generated by mHealth apps and wearables.
