Will Crypto Protocols Go to War with each other?

tl:dr; will coordinated protocol attacks emerge as a key marketing strategy as networks race towards critical mass?

I was reading a GitHub entry On sharding blockchains (really long and very technical, so you can probably skip it), and in one section, How does Plasma, state channels and other layer 2 technologies fit into the trilemma? (also long and techie), it said:

In the event of a large attack on Plasma subchains, all users of the Plasma subchains would need to withdraw back to the root chain.

Now, knowing what a Plasma subchain is doesn’t really matter, but think about the visual. If there’s an attack on the periphery, the users would have to retreat to the core.

Sounds like villagers sounding a city with fortified walls.

Now attacks on blockchains is something that have been talked about for a LONG time. Satoshi had it in the whitepaper. It’s a key component of the discipline.

I just started to wonder if, like we have already seen with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, will the advocates of one protocol that is seeking to gain traction/market share/adoption have coordinated attacks on other protocols?

It’s probably already happen.

It’s like corporate raiders, I suppose. Attack, in order to weaken.

It will be interesting to see if the industry evolves in this way and what new types of roles get created with what types of actors, like Mr. Gekko here.

The Protocol Wars….coming soon to a theater near you.
