Steemit Isn't Just About Writing For Writing's Sake, It's For Reporting, Too.

Many people who are new to the platform might get the impression that Steemit is little more than a fancy blogging site with a cryptocurrency attached. It's true that it is those things (and also that that alone would be pretty revolutionary considering the way it's implemented), but at it's core it's more than the sum of its parts.

Affecting the Real World

Things that happen on Steem blockchain aren't dead events etched in stone. They're living ones that have real repercussions and consequences in the real world, usually for the better from what I've seen. The community on Steemit can be seen as one that is indeed rewarding ideas, but perhaps more importantly rewarding work in the real world.

Utopian.io is a great example of this work being done, but I think that Steemit is closer to the point that I'm trying to make in this case. That's because Steemit is much more general than Utopian, and people can be rewarded within much wider parameters.

If you do something of worth in the real world and document it thoroughly on Steemit, you're not being rewarded for the article you wrote, you're being rewarded for the thing you did. This is a revolutionary approach to the expenditure of effort in relation to compensation.

Now it doesn't matter if you can find someone to pay you for what you do. You just need to have enough people with anything resembling an appreciable amount of SP to acknowledge it. There's still the problem of finding relevant content, but I think in time that problem will begin to be solved by better sorting methods and algorithms.

We Are On The Front Lines of The New Economy

I look at people like my father, still pushing the same old advice of "go to school, get a job, keep your head down for forty years (fifty in total if you are currently in your thirties or younger), and retire at 65 (again, 75 for most of us reading this)." People who don't understand that there are some massive changes coming, that no job is safe from automation or AI, that there are better opportunities on the horizon anyway, are going to be the losers when the cards get reshuffled in the next decade. Well, relatively speaking. They'll still win in the sense that they'll enjoy a better quality of living in general compared to people now - just not compared to people then.

We're seeing a massive tidal wave of societal transformation almost at the shore, and people still think that it's a cute little gimmick, that crypto, decentralization, and AI are just some ridiculous game for Millennials who can't 'grow up' and aren't mature enough to understand 'how things are'.

But the joke is on these people.

Because change is coming, and after, nothing will ever be the same.

That is true. There is a lot more to this platform then meets the eye. There are many smart free thinking individuals on this platform. It is only the begining

I agree. It's an exciting time to be on the blockchain!

most guys are in just to make a quick buck and just post anything that will get them a vote or two, but that doesnt mean their arent serious writers

I think as the community and culture develops that will change as people realize that there really aren't any shortcuts to consistently getting s good payout.

I do hope no one takes what I am about to say wrong. But there are plenty of us "old folk" who understand just enough to know that changes are coming, but are at a loss for what to do about it. Rather than saying "the joke is on us", have you thought about helping us learn? The problem here is we are speaking different languages. My degree is in Computer Science, but it is from 1980. As you get older, it becomes harder to learn. Partially because it physically becomes harder to learn and partially because when young people and old people talk, they are speaking basically two different languages. Half the time I feel like I am speaking a combo of English and German and all the young people are speaking a combo of English and Spanish (or whatever). So I catch just enough to understand a little of it, but not enough to try to get ahead and prepare for the future. Perhaps we need some sort of idiots guide to the future. I honestly don't know exactly what we need. But being shoved to the side and told "the joke is on me", is most assuredly not what we need. I think there is an entire market for some enterprising young people to make a fortune on Steemit and help some of us old folks to improve our lives at the same time.
