An article about Gladius - A new blockchain application to stop DDoS attacks

in #blockchain6 years ago (edited)

Blockchain technology is set to change the world. Bitcoin is just the proof of concept - everyday new coins are being developed that have the potential to change the world with their revolutionary use-cases.

The future is now

I have been invited by one such coin, Gladius, to write an article about the future of internet use with their new blockchain technology.

Content delivery is the backbone of the internet. Behind the scenes there are giant servers 'in the cloud' that deliver all of this content to us. Where is the cloud? Generally not in our backyards, unless you do happen to leave near a data center. And the way the system currently works, with a very high level of centralization, content creators and providers are frequently left vulnerable to Distributed Denial of Service Attacks on the Content Deliverers.

Distributed Denial of Service Attacks, what's that?

DDOS attacks, as they are also known, are a type of 'hacking' where a multitude of false requests are sent to overload the servers, attempting to prevent legitimate requests from getting through or getting filled. Why do I have hacking in parenthasis? Because this is a relatively simple 'hack' to pull off, it's basically the digital version of pressing too many buttons at the same time on the remote control. To many signals, not all of them can go through. If a bad actor can fill up the queue with fake requests, and the centralized server cannot scale to compensate, then many if not all of the legitamate requests will begin to fail.

DDoS attacks are very common, and relatively easy to perform, and they rely on the weakness of the centralized arquitecture of the internet.

Enter the Blockchain

Gladius proposes to use smart contracts on the etherium blockchain to organize unused bandwidth and storage space to assist over-capacity centralized servers in moments of crisis. This would be win-win transactions, both lowering the cost for a website to protect itself from DDoS attacks, and allowing those who have spare bandwidth and storage space to earn money by providing protection.

For the average person this would amount to running software. This software would mine Gladius tokens, and in this case mining would take the form of analyzing and processing content delivery in a decentralized manner.

Take a look at the video, which explains the process very well:

This seems like a fine service, and a great use of decentralization in technology. By using Smart Contracts on the Etherium Blockchain, customers and clients do not have to know or trust one another, they only have to agree to use the smart contract.

I am always looking forward to more uses of the revolutionary technology called Blockchain!

Love and Light to All!

if you use your computer during the day, there will be more bandwidth to make available at night. do you need to leave your computer running all night to take advantage of the extra bandwidth?

Technically, yes. The bandwidth is there either way, but your computer runs an application that orgainizes your extra bandwidth into this scheme.

Thinking about your question, it might not be ideal to run your whole computer set up all night, so potentially you could have a smaller system, say a rasperry pi, that could run this one app for you while your computer is off!

I have no information on what the minimum requirements would be to run this application, but its a good thought experiment! Great question ;p
