The Telegram Blockchain, TON, And Its Tokens, "Grams" Are Real After All

in #blockchain7 years ago (edited)

The instant messaging app Telegram is almost the de facto communication channel when it comes to cryptocurrencies. Almost every crypto project (apart from the compulsory bitcointalk.com thread), must have a Telegram group.

Launched and maintained by two brothers, Pavel Durov and Nikolai Durov, who were also the founders of the "Russian Facebook", or Vkontakte, Telegram literally exploded during the last two years.

In December last year, some news emerged in the crypto land about a blockchain project created by the two on top of the messaging app, and of a token called "Gram" (from Tele-gram, most likely). Although the white paper was featured even in Tech Crunch, its validity was a hot topic and it wasn't yet confirmed (or rejected, for what it matters) by any of the two brothers.

So the new "Telegram blockchain" was a bit of a foggy topic, with some of the commenters going as far as telling that this is a scam.

Well, based on this recent SEC filling, it seems the Telegram blockchain is alive and kicking and it has raised no less than $850 million in investments. The SEC filling was due in order to avoid treating the tokens as securities, which required US citizens willing to invest to be actually accredited investors ($1 million funds proven or at least $200,000 revenue during the last year).

So, in layman terms, the Telegram ICO wasn't really an ICO, but mostly a round A of VC investments (with names as popular as Abramovich among its participants) and is as real as the monitor on which you read this now.

To be honest, I really believe that a messaging app is one of the best use cases for a blockchain project and, if this takes off, it will very soon become a serious contender for Facebook duopoly of Messenger and Whatsapp.

Wanna know when you're getting paid?

I know the feeling. That's why I created steem.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your Steemit rewards

It's free to use, but if you think this is a useful addition, I'd appreciate your witness vote.

Thank you!

I will support any blockchain project...can't agree with you more:

To be honest, I really believe that a messaging app is one of the best use cases for a blockchian project and, if this takes off, it will very soon become a serious contender for Facebook duopoly of Messenger and Whatsapp.

More power to decentralization!

I have been waiting for this. This is going to be a real game changer!

I want it, give it to me! :D

I don't understand why this is such a big deal? How are they going to use the token and what's the point of putting a chat service on the block chain?

Are telegram users going to get paid like steemit users get paid?

They will get some tokens as promo for sure.

Telegram has hundreds of millions of users, if not a billion or more. It's the most praised messaging service around, even if it doesn't surpass Whatsapp's userbase. This cryptocurrency would be the first to be launched and to be adopted in such a massive manner. It's not Bitcoin, which started growing progressively, or Iota, which was praised but slowly adopted into what it is today.

Telegram has been maintained for years from Durov's pocket. Even though they haven't been for-profit for all these years, it has stood and grown to the solid platform it is today. Putting a cryptocurrency under its foundation would make it more like Steemit. They would be able to fund the project with this cryptocurrency and would not be eternally wasting resources.

And even more, as I said, this cryptocurrency would be automatically usable by hundreds of millions of users in one go. It's just fucking awesome. Everything about it.

Also, Telegram's servers are closed-source and centralized. If they manage to put them on the blockchain, people would trust Telegram more, since the apps are Open Source (all mobile, browser and desktop clients). It would be way more maintainable, transparent and expansible.

I'm confused as well. I assume the white paper explains things but I'm scared to even look at it. lol I'm pretty new to the crypto world. Just the other day I learned we are Proof of Stake and not Proof of Work like bitcoin.

You have a typo at Last paragraph

blockchian

It's a blockchain-based dog. (Dog in French is chien, pronounced chian)

Never heard of Telegram until I came across a print screen at Twitter where it was said about XVG coin that it will go up at a certain time. So, many groups have been active there to pump and dump different coins during this recent 'fud' period. Gram coin seems like something good.

I am in for anything that gives competition to whats app. I know many exists but having a competitor in the shape of blockchain might attract a lot of people.

What's app is easy and comfortable and convenient and is used by everyone. If this upcoming idea can achieve atleast half that then there will be no monopoly of facebook. Whatsapp is owned by facebook.

I had no idea about the blockchain. I have benefited a lot after your post. Thank you.

Your Posts are golden.

Yeah. I think writing down might have its advantages as well as disadvantages too.

When writing, you might not really get to pit down everything in the head.
But then in a video or an audio, u can get to say everything that comes to the mind.
But currently, I do more of writing cuz I'm not all that pretty to appear on a video. Lol.

Thanks for sharing

I think it's will be a great success as Telegram have a lot of active users that mean many users which will try to get a hold if it
So i'm 100% the price will get higher and higher and we will see many use for this coin
