Loomia - Meet the New Fashion Trend - Smart Clothing

I remember long ago in a movie Back in the Future I saw an episode that for some reason stuck in my memory. It was a scene with the self-lacing snickers. I thought "This would be really handy!" Now we live in the future, and among many things prophesied in science fiction smart clothes are also becoming a reality. Like the shoes that understand when it's cold outside and automatically turn on the heating to keep their owner warm. Or a jacket that lights up when it's getting dark, which would allow the cyclist, wearing it, to stay safe on the road at night. One of the possible applications of the embedded smart electronics is gathering information that might serve as a valuable feedback for the producers and distributors of clothes. The collected statistics might include information like, how often a person wears this cloth, in what conditions, what it's paired with. It might also include information about other wearer's preferences which can help to define the target audience for which this brand should be marketed.

This concept of smart clothes is successfully implemented by Loomia - a New-York based company, specializing in producing the fabric with built-in electronic components. The 3-years-old startup grew up from a studio, building prototypes for Google and North Face. Now it specializes in producing the textiles with the embedded smart electronics and is considered one of the best in this field. The company receives financing from a New-York based accelerator and a number of angel investors. The Loomia platform includes three components: Loomia Electronics Layer, Loomia Tile, and Loomia Data Exchange. Loomia Electronics Layer represents a circuitry embedded into clothing that can be used both to implement the smart behavior of clothes such as its reaction to light or temperature and for gathering information, valuable for marketing purposes. Loomia Tile is a miniature storage device, accumulating all the user's statistics. This information belongs to the owner of smart clothes and can be sold to the company of user's choice. The Loomia Data Exchange component is designed to facilitate such exchanges. This information, provided to the marketing companies, doesn't reveal user's identity, ensuring his or her privacy. Loomia Data Exchange uses blockchain technology for its transactions which guarantees a high level of reliability and security. A remarkable thing is that the clothes, produced using smart materials, already make their way into the fashion industry. For example, the dresses made of color-changing fabric produced by Loomia were recently presented at Julianna Bass' show during New York Fashion Week.
