As a full-time research student, I can categorically tell you that easy access and dissemination of information and resources is very vital to the progress of the work we do. Since the 17th century, periodical publishing has been the primary way researchers communicate their findings to their colleagues, sponsors and readers. In the recent years scientific publishing has established convention for publication such as an independent peer review of submissions, this was intended to conserve/keep the pride of the scientific process. This has brought about huge profit for the scientific publishers, in that they acquired much profits for organizations, research institute and even from the governments.

Moreover, they recently come under some increased attacks in the past years. The problems arise from the fact that journal publication has begun to play a role that is outside the real job description: journal publication now act as indicators of a researcher's prowess, and also determine the academic careers. In addition, the journal publication increases the costs of publication and the incentive to withhold results for months or perhaps years until the research is published is therefore powerful. But the delay can do real harm. For example, during the period of the Zika virus outbreak in Africa, the sponsors of the research had to persuade publishers to declare that scientists would not be punished for releasing their findings early. This should not be the case. Researchers should have free access to publish their findings without any fear or cost implications. Scientists should have a free platform to release information to the people anytime because the findings are crucial to the survival of the human race.

The good news is that there is a new platform built to solve all these problems and profer an easy solution for all. Orvium intends to encourage a free market and develop the efficiency and quality of the scientific publication. It is the first platform built to specifically manage academic publications through the implementation of the blockchain and smart contracts. The blockchain technology on its own embrace decentralization, which allows information to be disseminated faster and securely. The Orvium platform will use smart contracts which represent an agreement between different parties that are involved in a transaction. The smart contract is binding and holds each party responsible to carry out their pledges.

Traditionally, there are several centralized publication channels that scholars publish and keep their works on. For example, we have Sci-hub, home to numerous researchers and a channel for resource collation for readers. Unlike the decentralized storage that Orvium offers, Sci-hub is a centralized platform that is in control of all information stored on their platform. This restricts publishers do not have a channel where they can monitor what happens to their publications in the background. Theft of resources and ownership could occur. The solution Orvium is introducing will allow all records to be stored on the decentralized platform where all records and transactions can be easily monitored. This will breed trust and confidence in the publishing sector.

Through the incorporation of a cloud computing service, Orvium plans to deliver publications across the internets. Publications may include journals, articles, a book, magazine, etc., or simply put as any document that has been printed and made available to the public. By ensuring that this information is accessible over the internet, the barriers encountered by some readers in accessing resources are permanently removed. As documents are available online, everyone can freely access it at any time.

Orvium also plans to utilize a method where all information/data published on the network can be scrutinized thoroughly. The reason for this is to identify patterns and connections that might otherwise be overlooked, and that might provide valuable insights and understanding about the users who created it. Likewise, by doing this plagiarism of documents is totally eliminated. Once this is done, the researcher may be able to gain an edge over their rivals and make profit from their publications.

Orvium will implement low fees for paid transactions on the platform. This will be very affordable as compared to other centralized publication channels such as research gate and so many others. Scholars can also make money on the platform, as the network plans to become the leading publication responsible for publishing scientific research works and allowing the copyrights to be owned by the authors. This directive allows the scientists to make profits while reducing the cost of publishing that is overwhelming on the scientists at the same time.
