IBM and Ford Pilot Blockchain for Cobalt Supply Chain

A press release from IBM has revealed a blockchain pilot scheme between IBM, Ford Motors, Huayou Cobalt, LG Chem and RCS Global .

The pilot aims to investigate how blockchain can be used to “trace and validate ethically sourced materials”. The joint pilot covers vendors across the supply chain from mine to end-user.

Cobalt is an increasingly important resource, used in lithium-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries are growing in popularity and it is expected that the demand for cobalt will increase significantly in the coming years.

This collaborative pilot for the cobalt industry is proof that substances (literally) are being processed and tracked with blockchain technology.
