And rightfully so, spotting the next Facebook or Google in the plethora of startups today is no easy task to tackle with. Sifting through projects that usually seem the same with little to no innovation requires time and money spent in exhaustive research plans. Studies say that 98% of the companies venture capitalists to invest in, fail, however in that 2% lie the Facebooks of tomorrow that eventually make for the rest of the 98% loss.

It's risky business, and the venture capitalists know this, but they also know that to make money you have to invest money. The simple theorem of cause and effect that ripples through almost everything we work with.

EQUI: the game changer

In the traditional venture capital market, the two most used methods are equity and convertible debt.

Equity

Equity represents the act of issuing common stock or preferred stock. Once invested, the owner has the full property of the stock until some sort of sale or liquidity procedure takes place. Unlike debt, equity does not require the owner to repay the stocks, but they have to opportunity to reinvest for a higher stack in the shared company.

Convertible debt

Convertible debt represents a loan which gives the holder the option to convert it into equity at a later stage. In case that this option is not preferred, the credit can become repayable. However, it is common practice within the investing field to treat their loan investment similarly to the equity stake.
